Job Summary Job Title: Estimator/Preconstruction Location: Tempe, Arizona Reports to: Director of Business Development & Estimating Company Overview University Mechanical & Engineering Contractors (UMEC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of EMCOR Group Inc. UMEC is a full-service mechanical contractor serving the western United States. UMEC designs, builds, and commissions mechanical systems, including heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing and piping systems for commercial, institutional, high‑tech, industrial and military clients. Summary University Mechanical & Engineering Contractors, Inc. is currently looking for a Plumbing/Piping Estimator for our Tempe, AZ location. The Estimator/Preconstruction is responsible for all phases of the estimating and bidding process including preconstruction services and performing estimate take‑offs. Thorough knowledge of the mechanical construction bidding processes is required. Specific expertise with Plumbing, Mechanical Piping, and HVAC systems serving healthcare, institutional, commercial, high‑rise, clean rooms, and process systems for microelectronics facilities is a major plus. 2 to 5 years of Plumbing and Mechanical Piping Estimating/Preconstruction experience and proficiency in the preparation of large and complex bid proposals required. Mechanical Engineering Degree or Construction Management Degree from an accredited college/university preferred. Equal time of on‑site field experience is acceptable. Essential Duties And Responsibilities The Estimator/Preconstruction is responsible for producing mechanical estimates by analyzing proposals and requirements. Review and understand all of the project bid documents. Responsible for quantity take‑off, material, equipment and subcontractor pricing, spreadsheet input, and proposal preparation using Quick Pen estimating software or other estimating software. Work on‑site and/or in the main office while collaborating with a range of professionals on design‑assist projects, including mechanical engineering and design consultants. A remote or hybrid schedule—such as part‑time remote work—may also be available. Work as a team with other estimators, project teams, and other departments, such as our CAD detailing staff. Attend pre‑bid or team scope review meetings and understand the complete scope of work required, with sometimes limited information. Visit construction project sites for job walks and meetings in the Greater Phoenix area. Perform additional assignments as required by the needs of the company or as directed by executives. Preferred Education And/or Experience Minimum of 2 to 5 years Mechanical Construction Estimating/Preconstruction experience and proficiency in the preparation of large and complex bid proposals of all types. Professional experience that demonstrates specific expertise with Plumbing, Mechanical Piping, and HVAC systems serving healthcare, institutional, commercial, industrial manufacturing, data centers, clean rooms, and process systems for microelectronics facilities is a major plus. Work experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the mechanical construction bidding processes is required. Mechanical detailing experience using Revit, Assemble, Autodesk. Professional work experience that demonstrates proficient knowledge of mechanical and HVAC systems. Produce accurate, timely, and competitive estimates with minimal data. Working knowledge of federal, state, and city regulations and guidelines. Excellent communication skills with customers, vendors, subcontractors, general contractors, and owners. Ability to maintain organization while multitasking to meet estimating deadlines. Ability to adapt to University Mechanical’s estimating policies and procedures. Travel to job site locations in Greater Phoenix as needed. Computer Skills Must demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, (i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel). Familiarity with project management/document control software. Familiarity with construction/financial software packages. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, see, talk, and hear. The employee is regularly required to walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to commute to field locations to accurately perform takeoffs. The employee must have the ability to navigate around job site locations.
