Job Title - Assistant Director for Library Engagement and Enrichment

Summary - The Assistant Director for Library Engagement and Enrichment provides strategic leadership and vision for community engagement and the overall student experience at the Grasselli Library and Breen Learning Center. In this role, they design dynamic programming to inspire students and enrich their academic journey. Additionally, the Assistant Director oversees the planning and implementation of key service areas central to student successspecifically academic tutoring, research & reference, and creativity & experimentation.Reporting to the University Librarian Director of the Library, this twelve-month professional staff position leads outreach initiatives tailored to all students. By collaborating with library colleagues and campus stakeholders, the Assistant Director helps create welcoming activities and services that foster student learning and a sense of belonging. This position also teaches course-integrated information literacy, AI literacy, and library research instruction classes, while providing direct research and reference assistance to both students and faculty.

Duties and Responsibilities - Oversee the library's established peer-to-peer academic tutoring service. Includes direct supervision of a Graduate Assistant who is responsible for the day-to-day management of the service.Manage the library's newly created peer-to-peer research & reference service.Develop, coordinate, and host programming & workshops focusing on creativity and experimentation in the library's makerspace.Hire, train, and supervise undergraduate student employees.Arrange for traditional library events and programs for students, faculty, and staff (e.g. new student orientation, finals week, wellness programs, enrollment fairs).Review and assess services and programs.Develop relationships and engage with library-building partners and other University departments.Teach course-integrated information literacy, AI literacy, and library research instruction throughout the University's curriculum and programs, including the creation of asynchronous learning tools & objects.Provide in-depth research & reference assistance to support student and faculty scholarship.Educate students on effective, ethical, and responsible uses of generative AI and other emerging technologies.Participate in professional development to stay aware of new teaching and library research tools for services, outreach & engagement, and information literacy.Serve on library and John Carroll University campus committees, task forces, and working groups as assigned.Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications - Master's degree in library and information science, or equivalent.1 year of professional experience in an academic, public, or school library.Demonstrated experience planning, implementation, and overseeing library programming and/or services.Demonstrated experience teaching information literacy and critical thinking skills.Demonstrated experience providing research and reference assistance via a variety of methods (e.g. in person, email, chat, text).Demonstrated knowledge of AI tools (e.g., language models, citation generators, data visualization platforms).Interest and ability to explore and incorporate arts and emerging technologies into learning and research support.Ability to work flexibly and creatively both with others in a team environment as well as independently.Demonstrated experience collaborating on multi-department, cross-organizational initiatives.Proficiency in Google G-suite; MS Word and Excel.Excellent organizational, interpersonal, collaborative, written and verbal communication skills.Possess and demonstrate the ability to work with diverse constituencies and have excellent skills in oral and written communication.Interest in understanding and supporting John Carroll's mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world.

Preferred Qualifications - Experience training and supervising undergraduate student employees.Familiarity with Springshare products (e.g. LibGuides, LibAnswers).Experience in the ethical and effective use of AI in teaching and library services.Familiarity with Student Information System and Learning Management Systems, e.g. Canvas.Experience with teaching or tutoring.Examples of initiative, resourcefulness, and creativity.

Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions - This position works in person from our campus in University Heights, Ohio. University core business hours are generally 8:30 am 5:00 pm. However this position will require work tobe performed outside of normal business hours based on department operations.

Physical Requirements - Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Hours - Full Time

FLSA - Exempt (Salary)

Compensation & Benefits - Starting salary will be $62,000 $72,000. This position offers a generous Total Rewards package that includes health and dental insurance options, paid vacation, personal, sick, and mission time, holidays, 403 (b) retirement plan, life insurance, and tuition remission benefits for you, your spouse, and children.
