Field Investigator (Paid on-call) - Roseau County and Lake of the Woods County, MN

• 100.00 per scene/investigation
• 20.00 per hour for planned trainings, meetings or other authorized time

Mileage reimbursement per IRS guidelines Pension plan Advancement/professional development opportunities Work Location & Relocation The on‑call position is located in Roseau County or Lake of the Woods County, MN. Candidates must currently reside within one hour of the listed counties or be willing to relocate within three weeks of hire. Job Duties & Responsibilities Respond to death scenes in a timely manner, often on an on‑call basis for a specific area, especially for unexpected deaths. Perform detailed inspection and appropriate photographs of the body and surrounding area. Make presumptive identification and take steps to facilitate positive identification. Obtain demographics, medical and social history by interviewing neighbors, friends, family, nursing staff, or primary physician, including providing support in times of grief. Make preliminary determination of cause and manner of death at the scene, determine if forensic autopsy is warranted, and refer or decline jurisdiction in coordination with the pathologist as needed. Assess body position, weapon position, wound types, postmortem changes, and other pertinent factors; evaluate for consistency with the scene and decedent’s history. Photograph and accurately document scene and circumstances; provide concise written reports, including photos and sketches. Collect, inventory and package property/evidence to be removed from the scene, maintaining strict chain of custody. Coordinate and interact with all appropriate law‑enforcement and investigative agencies on scene in a professional manner. Maintain a high level of confidentiality. Provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring to a subordinate group as assigned. Qualifications and Requirements Minimum: Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of job‑related experience (or equivalently combined education and experience). Valid driver’s license and vehicle available for business use. Preferred: Degree in Physical or Social Sciences, Criminal Justice, or related field. Demonstrated ability to maintain high degree of confidentiality. Demonstrated skill in investigating, collecting, interpreting, and reporting information regarding death scenes, medical history, and related data. Effective communication with grieving individuals, medical community, law‑enforcement, public safety agencies, funeral homes, and community. Ability to organize and manage multiple activities with precision. Knowledge of pharmacological and medical terminology helpful. Physical Demands and Work Conditions Laboratory, morgue, indoor and outdoor field work sites based on assignment. Requires good vision (close and distant) and color discrimination; hearing for communication and machine sounds; ability to detect scents. Requires problem‑solving, prioritization, memory, document interpretation, basic math. Hours may include several hours of varied physical activity, screen use, sitting, walking, standing. Tasks include bending, stooping, reaching, frequent wrist and finger manipulation, handling medical equipment, occasionally pushing carts over 300 lbs. Regular lifting of 100 lbs. or more. May involve travel to other county work sites; driving a county or personal vehicle. Exposure to bodily fluids, infectious agents, radiation, toxic chemicals, or other hazards.
