About the Role
The Company is seeking a General Counsel to join its Executive Leadership Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the legal posture and interests of the organization, with a focus on areas such as member benefits, litigation support and strategy, health care, fiduciary issues, ethics, investments, contracts, employment law, open meetings, compliance, and governance. This role involves advising the CEO and Board of Trustees on a wide range of legal matters, overseeing a team of attorneys and paralegals, and managing relationships with external counsel. The General Counsel will also be involved in the organization's risk and compliance function and will support board governance and meeting management to ensure effective practices. Applicants for the General Counsel position at the company should have a Juris Doctorate and a minimum of 10 years of professional legal work experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership or executive role. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in areas such such as retirement plans, administrative proceedings, litigation, investments, taxes, insurance, contracts, and labor law. Experience with regulatory and compliance activities related to public pension plans and institutional investment programs is preferred. The role requires a candidate with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to build and maintain effective relationships, and a commitment to upholding fiduciary duties. The General Counsel will also be responsible for managing a team, setting performance standards, and fostering a positive and inclusive work environment.
