Police Officer – Certified About the City The City of Sugar Land is a fast‑growing community on the southwest side of Houston, ranked as one of America’s safest cities for over ten years. The Sugar Land Police Department is a CALEA‑accredited 180‑sworn officer unit that offers opportunities for specialized assignments and training. Compensation and Benefits Starting hourly pay: $37.62 ($78,250 annually) with increases up to $105,685 in Step 10 (after 9+ years of service). Pay for Performance Awards up to $4,000/yr. Incentive pay for education: $600 (Associate’s), $1,200 (Bachelor’s), $1,800 (Master’s). Incentive pay for TCOLE certificates: $600 (Intermediate), $1,200 (Advanced), $1,800 (Master). Field Training Officer: $1,500/yr; Field Training Coordinator: $3,000/yr. SWAT or Crisis Negotiator Assignment: $1,500/yr. Longevity Pay: $4/month up to $1,200 annually after 13 months. Member of Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) – 7% contribution with 2:1 city match. City‑subsidized medical, dental, and life insurance. Long‑term disability insurance. Voluntary vision, supplemental life coverage, Aflac indemnity plans, legal benefits. 13 paid holidays annually. Vacation: 80 hours paid annually, up to 160 hours after 11 years. Paid sick leave accrual of 3.69 hours per pay period. Paid parental leave up to 6 weeks. On‑site wellness facilities and programming. Access to mental health benefits, including an Employee Assistance Program. Essential Qualifications TCOLE certification or enrollment in a Texas Police Academy. Preferred: Bachelor’s degree with GPA 2.0+ (expected graduation within 180 days of application). OR Two years active U.S. Armed Forces experience with honorable discharge (or expected discharge within 180 days). OR Completion of a six‑year military obligation (Reservists) within 180 days. OR Five‑year stable job history at a single employer or sole proprietor, demonstrating growth and leadership, within the last 7 years. U.S. citizenship and valid driver’s license with good driving record. No history of conduct that would affect suitability for law enforcement. Must pass physical fitness test, oral interview board, polygraph test, and thorough background investigation. Non‑smokers preferred. Application Process Qualified candidates will complete an online application, participate in a physical assessment and preliminary interview, an oral review board, submit a background packet, undergo a polygraph examination, and complete medical and psychological testing.
