Education & Youth Program Coordinator

Pittock Mansion is a 1914 historic house museum, owned by the City of Portland, Parks and Recreation and operated by the Pittock Mansion Society. The premises include the Mansion, the Gate Lodge, and the Garage with beautiful gardens adjacent to Pittock Vista Point. The mission of the organization is to inspire understanding and stewardship of Portland history through Pittock Mansion, its collections, and programs. Pittock Mansion is one of the top tourist destinations in Portland. The organization is at an exciting juncture of growth, reimagination, and evolution with the new vision, Pittock 2.0.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position will focus on developing and offering new engagement strategies and programs for the K-12 students as well as “out of school” programs such as afterschool activities, themed birthdays and more. This role will initiate and nurture new connections with the greater Portland educators and offer enriched professional development opportunities through Pittock Mansion’s collections, exhibits and stories. The coordinator will work closely with students, families, educators, volunteers, and community partners to foster a positive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment at Pittock Mansion. The position will report to the Director of Marketing, Communications and Audience Development. They will also collaborate closely with the Manager of Sales, Services and Programs and the Guest Experience Team. The position will be the main POC for school tours, teachers, and family programming. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOTLIMITED TO: School Programs: Design, coordinate, and facilitate K-12 programs aligned with organizational goals. These would include a variety of field trips for elementary and middle schools as well as engaging learning opportunities for high school students. Revise and update current Discovery program offerings. Deliver new curriculum aligned lesson plans combined with educational activities tailored to age groups (typically ages 5–16). Recruit, train, and manage volunteers to assist with field trips. Coordinate logistics of field trips with the Guest Experience Team keeping them aware of schedules and bookings. Send confirmation communication to schools upon reservation, collect payments in a timely manner and coordinate scholarships to schools as applicable. Build strong relationships with schools, parents, and community stakeholders to support education audience development. Develop school audience growth target goals and deliver measurable outcomes. Teacher Programs: Create an expanded database of area educators and proactively raise awareness of Pittock Mansion’s educational value with exhibits and collections. Promote, organize, and host Teacher Open Houses once or twice a year. Work closely with Pittock Mansion’s content experts to develop handouts and presentations for the teacher open house. Manage Pittock Mansion’s to-be-launched Teacher Fellow program with select area educators and co-design educational materials such as pre and post visit activities. Family programming: Act as the lead to organize and offer weekend arts and crafts activities on a seasonal basis. Develop and offer themed birthday party offerings for children ages 5-10 throughout the year. Procure and organize supplies and materials. Administrative: Maintain database of various target audiences. Maintain accurate program records, attendance, and reporting data for evaluations and grant compliance. Monitor and evaluate program outcomes and make adjustments for continuous improvement. Handle all communications related to school, teacher and out of school, audiences. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

Bachelor’s degree in history, art, education, youth development or related field 3-5 years of experience in youth programming, teaching, or community engagement. Knowledge of museum education concepts, strategies, ethics, and standards in addition to contemporary educational methods, including for informal learning environments Experience with curriculum development or project-based learning. Strong leadership, organizational, and people skills. Experience working with diverse populations and managing group dynamics. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic data entry. CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain). Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings or weekends. Bilingual or multilingual skills a plus. Proficient in Zoom or other virtual programming platforms — experience facilitating in-person and virtual public programs. Cultural competence and ability to facilitate open dialogue. Effectively problem-solve, manage details, and produce results in a fast-paced, changing environment. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills Creativity, flexibility, adaptability, professionalism, and a positive attitude Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with staff, visitors, volunteers, professional colleagues, and diverse members of the community including schools, community agencies, institutions, and the public. Proficient in Microsoft Office programs Occasional hours (weekends, evenings) outside the set schedule required.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND OTHER CONDITIONS:

Ability to work in shared/open space office environment. Work is required to be done onsite at Pittock Mansion with some hybrid as approved by the direct supervisor or during inclement weather days. Some evening and weekend work is required Workstations may not be in a climate-controlled environment. Light to medium work that includes moving objects up to thirty pounds. Ability to do set up and tear down during events, carry and set up supplies etc. Ability to navigate stairs and fair amount of walking on the Pittock Estate grounds.
