Director of Academic Assessment & Program ReviewReporting to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, the Director of Academic Assessment and Program Review works to advance a campus-wide culture of continuous educational improvement. This role focuses on faculty professional development, mentoring, and providing substantive feedback on student learning outcomes and assessment methods, measures, and reports. Supported by an accreditation and compliance team and an APR coordinator, the Director serves as an institutional coach, helping faculty translate assessment data and 8-year program reviews into actionable curricular enhancements.In addition to leading institutional assessment strategy, the Director plays a key role in the curriculum design and approval process, collaborating with academic programs to develop or revise curriculum that aligns with program and institutional learning outcomes. This includes consulting with units on curriculum mapping, supporting alignment with general education outcomes, and reviewing and approving program learning outcomes, curriculum maps, and assessment plans for new program proposals and significant revisions within the university's curriculum workflow. The Director ensures that institutional assessment and curricular practices align with accreditation requirements and recognized best practices, supporting institutional accountability, improvement, and educational quality.Responsibilities include overseeing student learning outcomes assessment across all undergraduate, graduate, certificate, and degree programs; reviewing annual academic assessment reports and providing expert, constructive feedback to improve data quality and curricular alignment; designing and delivering high-impact workshops and one-on-one consultations; leading the assessment of the university's general education curriculum in partnership with the General Education Council; partnering with the Director of Institutional Effectiveness to provide evidence of student learning for institutional accreditation and assist departments with specialized programmatic accreditations; overseeing the 8-year APR cycle and the resulting annual action plans; managing the academic side of the university's assessment software platform; convening and leading the Assessment Council to foster an institutional culture of continuous improvement; ensuring assessment policies are current, compliant, and consistently implemented; participating in relevant committees, workgroups, accreditation task forces, and institutional initiatives; and performing other related strategic projects, committee assignments, or institutional initiatives as directed to support the university's evolving mission.Minimum qualifications include a Master's required with a strong background in educational research, curriculum design, psychometrics, or assessment; 5+ years in higher education, with a proven track record of facilitating high-quality faculty workshops; exceptional emotional intelligence and coaching skills; experience with curricular mapping and outcomes assessment platforms; excellent communication, presentation, and facilitation skills; ability to lead collaborative initiatives across multiple departments; exceptional planning and organizational skills; ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with multiple populations; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to work under pressure, solve problems, and negotiate; knowledge of accreditation requirements and educational regulatory standards; advanced skills in educational research design, data analysis, and interpretation of assessment outcomes; ability to assess and recommend improvements to programs, policies, and academic offerings using data, student feedback, faculty input, and external benchmarks; and demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences.Preferred qualifications include a Ph.D. or Ed.D. highly preferred with a strong background in educational research, curriculum design, psychometrics, assessment, or faculty development; seven or more years of progressively responsible experience in assessment, institutional effectiveness, or accreditation leadership within higher education; direct experience leading institution-wide accreditation efforts, including preparing self-studies, assurance arguments, or compliance reports for institutional or specialized accrediting bodies; experience collaborating with curriculum committees in the review and approval of program learning outcomes, curriculum maps, and assessment components of curricular proposals; strong record of professional engagement and leadership in assessment or accreditation organizations; experience with general education assessment design and oversight, including faculty engagement and curriculum alignment; and demonstrated ability to lead faculty development initiatives, such as learning communities or workshops on assessment and curriculum mapping.The Office of the Provost is committed to the growth and professional development of the Academic Affairs team and will provide opportunities to foster a culture of learning and career development during your tenure in the Office of the Provost.Salary range: up to $100,000, commensurate with experience.Benefits: All full-time university staff are eligible for VCU's robust benefits package that includes comprehensive health benefits, paid annual and holiday leave, generous tuition benefits, retirement planning and savings options, tax-deferred annuity and cash match programs, employee discounts, well-being resources, abundant opportunities for career development and advancement, and more.FLSA exemption status: Exempt.
