Veterinary Technician or Senior Veterinary Technician

Job Summary Under the direction of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, the veterinary technician contributes to the health and well‑being of patients by delivering outstanding, high‑quality veterinary technician services that meet the standards of the MVMA and MAVT as well as VMC standards and protocols. The technician assists clinicians and other medical staff with veterinary medical procedures, including but not limited to surgical assisting, emergency care, intensive care, small animal medicine, rehabilitation, laboratory procedures, radiography, anesthesiology, and specialty care. The technician administers treatments, animal nursing, restraint and handling, preventative care, and clinical research across the service area with little or no supervision. Essential Functions Assists clinicians, clients and patients with receiving, assessment, work‑up, discharge, and prepares patients for a variety of veterinary medical procedures including radiographic procedures, surgeries, catheters, venipunctures, vaccinations, anesthesia, intensive or emergency care, and administration of medications. Provides excellent service to DVMs and the medical team that supports quality patient care. Facilitates open communication and teamwork among clinical care team members in support of positive patient outcomes and excellent patient care. Restrains and handles animals and/or assists with animal restraint and handling. Performs a variety of medical and diagnostic procedures, including intravenous and related therapies, obtaining fluid or tissue samples, and performing biopsy techniques. Administers medications, vaccinations, allergy testing, and other duties defined by the clinician. Applies clinical job knowledge and competence to patient management under the oversight of a DVM. Answers questions and demonstrates procedures and equipment to clients, residents, interns, senior veterinary students, and technician students, and assists with teaching labs. Performs record‑keeping tasks related to medical procedures, including recording procedures completed, supplies used, patient status, client communications, census information, etc. Ensures all services and supplies are charged according to the hospital fee schedule. Prepares and maintains daily service schedules, including facilities such as operating rooms, specialty areas, and pharmacies. Adheres to safety and infection control policies and procedures. Works effectively in a clinical setting. Other Functions Assists in other service areas, develops cross‑functional skills, and uses time efficiently to help other areas of the hospital. Maintains a clean environment, ensures areas are stocked, and that equipment is in working order. Participates in daily rounds. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor, clinician, or clinical manager. Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, push, pull, use hands to finger, hold, handle or feel animals or objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; restrain animals; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; speak or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds without assistance, and occasionally lift and/or move over 50 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Work Environment The work is generally performed at the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, and at the Veterinary Medical Center. The environment may include exposure to noise, bright or low lighting, temperature variations, animal bodily fluids and waste, and allergens such as mold, dust, hay, and animal hair and dander. Required Qualifications Graduate of a Veterinary Technician or equivalent program. Must be eligible for certification through MVMA/MAVT within one year of employment. Preferred Qualifications Problem‑solving skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Knowledge of veterinary medicine terminology. Knowledge of proper restraint and handling of large and small animals. Willingness to be flexible to meet patient care needs. Certified technician with certification recognized in Minnesota. Two years of veterinary technician experience preferred. Proficiency with PC and software programs. Pay and Benefits Pay Range: $24.58-$29.57 per hour, depending on education, qualifications, and experience. Time Appointment: 75% appointment.
