Genetic Counseling Assistant Manhattan Cancer Center

Position Summary The Genetic Counseling Assistant (GCA) serves as an assistant to the cancer genetic counselor(s) for the High Risk Cancer Genetics Program at NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center. The GCA is responsible for collection of patient information prior to the appointment, data entry of intake information, coordination of patient care, and facilitation of genetic testing and results disclosure. The GCA helps build a relationship with patients and the High Risk Cancer Genetics Program. The GCA also facilitates workflow of clinic patients and research projects as needed. Job Responsibilities Review patient entered data in the clinical database. Elicit a three‑generation family cancer history from the patient, entering data into Progeny and constructing pedigrees. Conduct patient risk assessment using clinical data (EMR and Progeny) to calculate cancer risks with validated models (Gail model, Tyrer‑Cuzick, Claus, etc). Assist the genetic counselor with the genetic testing process including informed consent, lab orders, specimen preparation, and tracking results. Assist with variant curation for genetic test results using ClinVar, SIFT, Polyphen, EXACT, Mutation Taster, etc. With training, review negative results with patients and document in EPIC. Manage genetic counselor calendar to assist with consult scheduling. Facilitate genetic counseling/testing workflows to improve patient access. Facilitate Progeny workflow: send questionnaires, track completions, review eligibility, and coordinate appointments. Facilitate ongoing research protocols: pack study kits, screen for eligibility, maintain study databases, inventory management, and sample transportation. Perform other duties as assigned. Additional Position Specific Responsibilities Assist genetic counselors in preparing and organizing materials for genetics lectures/seminars and community outreach events. Assist with data collection for research studies and gather statistics for the program. Perform literature searches for publications relevant to patient conditions. Participate in the High‑Risk Cancer Genetics case conference and review rare genetic findings or syndromes. Present complex cases for input from genetic counselors, geneticists, and high‑risk medical oncology team. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and clinical experience. Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills. Basic math and computer skills, knowledge of medical terminology. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in genetics or biological sciences. Experience in a medical facility, familiarity with medical terminology, reviewing medical records, test requisitions, pathology reports. Experience in genetics‑related field or basic science research. Experience with Microsoft Office products (Access, Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook). Experience utilizing electronic health records. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to enhance the patient experience. Strong organization and multi‑tasking skills. Salary NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state law on salary transparency in job advertisements. The salary range for the role is $43,656.26 - $57,000.00 annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses, incentives, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits.
