Assistant Director, Financial Aid (Undergraduate)

Assistant Director, Financial Aid (Undergraduate) Join our community and experience Emerson College! The Assistant Director, Financial Aid position reports to theAssociate Director, Financial Aid and will provide operationalfinancial aid to students and parents to assist them to understandthe financial aid process as well as their financial aid packageand student account balance. Additionally, this role willcoordinate all aspects of the financial aid process for specificfederal, state, and/or institutional programs, as well as apopulation of undergraduate students based on an alpha or programsplit. This is an important role that requires accuracy, attentionto detail, and excellent customer service skills.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Meet with prospective and enrolled students as requested todiscuss financial concerns, answer questions about financial aidawarding and eligibility, and review alternative resources tofinance education costs. Complete file review process, including the federalverification process. Review submitted documentation for accuracy andcompletion. Manage applications for students who submitted multiplefinancial aid applications. Assist with awarding need-based and non-need-based aid; adjustbudgets and aid packages as appropriate for students in specialprograms. Find and analyze any discrepancy or area of conflictinginformation as it relates to a student's record or financial aidapplication and request the necessary documentation to correctthese issues. Counsel matriculated students in the event of a financialcrisis, assisting them to review their options to appeal foradditional aid and requesting supporting documents to recalculatetheir financial need based on their changed situation. Counsel new families during the application process through thefinancial aid procedures; continue to work with them as the studentdeposits and enrolls. Coordinate financial aid appeals, making recommendations to theDirector of Financial Aid. Process all aspects of specific federal or institutionalprograms, reviewing all documentation in a timely manner to ensurethat students receive the appropriate level of funding. Provide outreach to students about registration plans thatmight need adjustments to their financial aid based on theirregistration Serve as the main point of contact for one or more federal,state, or institutional programs; liaise as necessary with theappropriate federal, state, or Emerson departments and authoritiesto ensure that students receive the appropriate level of fundingand funds are reconciled monthly. Programs could include one ormore of the following: state aid, veterans benefits, the FederalPell Grant, Global Pathways Programs, Study Abroad, specialtyinstitutional funds, etc. Perform general administrative tasks. Provide guidance and training to other staff members asrequired. Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS - Qualifications are deemed required orpreferred and represent what is needed to effectively performjob. Bachelor's Degree preferred. Minimum of 3 years of experience in higher education, humanresources, finance, accounting and/or strong customer servicesetting; 2-4 years of experience in a financial aid department ispreferred. Experience with financial aid/student information systemsoftware (knowledge of Banner and/or Workday Student ispreferred). KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - May be representative,but not all-inclusive, of those knowledge, skills, and abilitiescommonly associated with the job. Broad understanding of Student Financial Services generalservices, procedures, and policies Ability to handle difficult phone calls and student meetings bycommunicating information clearly and compassionately. Exceptional accuracy and attention to detailrequired Fluency in a second language preferred Proficiency in using Google Suite applications, Microsoft suitesoftware, and the ability to learn new software easily Up-to-date knowledge of college and federal rules governingfinancial aid policies, procedures, and pre-requisites Understanding of the financial aid review cycles as it relatesto applicants, current students, students returning, and studentsleaving or graduating Self-starter with excellent interpersonal communication andproblem-solving skills Strong customer service skills and the ability to engage withstudents and parents in a patient and positive manner Good organizational skills with the ability to maintainmultiple projects simultaneously and to prioritize tasks Ability to handle stressful situations in a courteous andprofessional manner Ability to engage well with a diverse population PHYSICAL ABILITIES - Activities commonly associated with theperformance of the functions of this job. The physical demandsdescribed below are representative of those that must be met by anemployee to successfully perform the essential functions of thisjob. Ability to have continuous oral and written communication withstudents, families, co-workers and supervisors isessential. Repetitive movements, occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds,reaching, lifting, stooping and the ability to read a computerscreen, detect color-coding and read fine print will beexpected.
