Police Officer

POSITION SUMMARY The Police Officer is responsible for protecting life and property, enforcing federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, preventing and investigating crime, responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, and maintaining public safety. Police Officers are expected to conduct themselves with professionalism, integrity, sound judgment, and respect for all community members. Officers work closely with residents, businesses, emergency services, and other law-enforcement agencies to promote a safe and secure community. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Patrol assigned areas to prevent crime and protect life and property.
• Respond promptly and appropriately to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
• Enforce federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
• Investigate reported crimes, disturbances, accidents, and other incidents.
• Conduct interviews and gather information from victims, witnesses, and involved parties.
• Prepare accurate, thorough, and timely incident, arrest, and investigative reports.
• Make lawful arrests and take appropriate enforcement action when necessary.
• Conduct traffic enforcement and investigate traffic crashes.
• Provide assistance during medical emergencies, fires, hazardous situations, and other incidents.
• Preserve crime scenes and collect, document, and protect evidence in accordance with department procedures.
• Testify in court and provide accurate documentation regarding investigations and enforcement actions.
• Maintain professional relationships with community members and partner agencies.
• Participate in community-policing and crime-prevention activities.
• Operate department vehicles, radios, computers, and other law-enforcement equipment safely and responsibly.
• Maintain required certifications, training, firearms proficiency, and physical readiness.
• Maintain confidentiality of sensitive law-enforcement information.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisory personnel. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Applicants must meet all applicable requirements established by the State of Texas, the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), and the Lorena Police Department.
Typical requirements may include:
• U.S. citizenship or other eligibility required by applicable law.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid Texas driver's license or ability to obtain one.
• Eligibility for Texas peace officer licensure.
• Successful completion of all required background, physical, medical, psychological, and other pre-employment screening.
• Ability to successfully complete required law-enforcement training and field training.
• Ability to meet department standards for firearms proficiency and physical readiness. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES The successful candidate should demonstrate:

• Ability to work varying shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
• Physical ability to perform the essential functions of police work. WORK ENVIRONMENT Police Officers may work in a variety of environments and conditions, including extreme weather, traffic, residential and commercial areas, crime scenes, and other potentially hazardous situations. The position may require prolonged periods of standing, walking, sitting, driving, and physical activity. Officers may encounter stressful, unpredictable, or potentially dangerous circumstances while performing their duties.
