Job Description Northwestern Medicine has an exciting opportunity for either an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or a Physician Assistant to work in our inpatient General Cardiology and Advanced Heart Failure department. The department (Galer 10) hosts 17 APPs covering 48 beds. APPs support 4 Cardiology services with rotating attendings each week, with an average load of 7 patients per day. The APP provides primary service to patients experiencing complex, advanced Heart Failure care, VADs, and General Cardiology. Schedule 4 x 10 hour shifts with rotating weekends and holidays No nights or on-call duties Essential Functions Demonstrates clinical expertise and expanded knowledge through patient care activities, including diagnosis and management of a wide range of health problems. Responsible for health outcomes of an assigned patient population. Collaborates with physicians and other health professionals in clinical areas of expertise. Develops appropriate educational systems for patients, families and staff. Mentors graduate students in advanced practice and patient care. Actively participates in quality improvement and/or research. Responsibilities Conducts comprehensive appraisals of patients' health status by taking histories and performing physical examinations. Provides direct clinical care to patients. Prescribes or orders medications, therapies, laboratory tests, x‑rays and procedures within clinical privileges. Evaluates patients to determine need for further health care. Provides comprehensive teaching to patients and families. Documents all care and education provided in the medical record. Refers to other disciplines as appropriate. Consults with other disciplines in areas of expertise. Integrates research‑based knowledge and clinical expertise into decision making. Exemplifies a professional image in appearance, manner and presentation. Advocates for patients, families, coworkers, and the community. Maintains certifications and continuing education as required for licensure and privileging. Serves as a patient advocate and role model for "Patients First". Participates in unit/departmental/divisional or hospital committees/task forces. Provides teaching strategies for patients and families. Develops and participates in programs to meet continuing education needs of staff. Serves as a role model and preceptor to students. Provides formal education to internal and external groups pertaining to specialty. Participates in quality improvement and/or research initiatives for specific patient populations. Qualifications Required Master’s degree from an accredited school/college of nursing or accredited Physician Assistant Program. Acute care certification required for APRNs. Current license as a Registered Nurse in Illinois; Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in Illinois; certification as an APRN by a national certifying body approved by the Illinois Department of Regulation APRN Board. Possession of a controlled substance license and DEA number or current license as a Physician Assistant in Illinois. Privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office. Basic Life Support certification (American Heart Association). Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required as specified by department. Preferred Two years of clinical experience.
