Dialysis Technician

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Dialysis Technician to provide direct patient care and support hemodialysis treatments under the direction of registered nursing staff and in accordance with established protocols, physician orders, and patient prescriptions.

The Dialysis Technician is responsible for preparing and operating dialysis equipment, monitoring patients throughout treatment, documenting treatment information, responding to dialysis-related emergencies, maintaining equipment and supplies, and communicating patient concerns to the appropriate clinical staff.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare dialysate according to established procedures and the patient's prescription.
• Obtain and document pre-dialysis vital signs, including weight and temperature.
• Inspect dialysis access and initiate treatment according to established protocols and the patient's prescription.
• Insert and manage access needles as appropriate and within the scope of practice.
• Measure, calculate, and adjust blood flow rates according to established protocols and patient prescriptions.
• Administer anticoagulants in accordance with applicable protocols and prescriptions.
• Adjust fluid removal rates and patient positioning and administer Normal Saline as directed by the RN, authorized provider, or established protocol.
• Continuously monitor patient vital signs and overall condition throughout treatment.
• Accurately document patient observations, treatment parameters, and clinical information in the electronic medical record.
• Communicate changes in patient condition, concerns, and treatment issues promptly to nursing staff.
• Monitor dialysis equipment, respond to alarms, and make appropriate treatment adjustments according to established protocols and individual patient needs.
• Respond appropriately to dialysis-related emergencies, including hypotensive episodes, needle displacement or infiltration, clotting, blood leaks, air embolism, and other treatment complications.
• Initiate CPR and emergency response procedures when indicated and within appropriate training and scope of practice.
• Discontinue dialysis according to established procedures and achieve hemostasis.
• Inspect, clean, and dress dialysis access following treatment and established protocols.
• Obtain and document post-dialysis vital signs, including weight and temperature.
• Verify the absence of residual sterilants before patient treatment.
• Collect fluid samples and other specimens as required and prepare specimens for appropriate testing or shipment.
• Properly dispose of dialysis supplies and sanitize equipment according to manufacturer instructions and facility protocols.
• Communicate patients' emotional, medical, psychosocial, and nutritional concerns to the RN or appropriate clinical professional.
• Monitor and document vascular access status under the direction of registered nursing staff.
• Provide patients with appropriate education and reinforce treatment-related instructions.
• Ensure patients have adequate care supplies and assist with inventory monitoring and restocking.
• Assist nursing staff with basic patient care and treatments as directed.
• Review laboratory results and physician or provider orders as appropriate to assigned responsibilities.
• Perform basic clinical procedures within the scope of training and practice, such as changing bandages.
• Prepare dialysis equipment before treatment and properly clean and maintain equipment following treatment.
• Test and monitor dialysis machines and related equipment, including alarms, conductivity, and temperature.
• Set monitors and alarms according to manufacturer instructions and established protocols.
• Complete treatment flow sheets and electronic medical record documentation accurately to support patient care and billing requirements.
• Maintain professional conduct, effective communication, patient confidentiality, and respect for patient dignity at all times.
• Participate in multidisciplinary care planning and team communication.
• Comply with applicable organizational policies and procedures as well as state and federal regulations, including CMS, HIPAA, OSHA, and other applicable requirements.
• Participate in quality assurance, patient safety, and cost-containment initiatives.
• Participate in individual and group projects as assigned by management.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Skills

• Experience in dialysis, patient care, or a related clinical healthcare setting preferred.
• Knowledge of hemodialysis procedures, equipment, and patient monitoring preferred.
• Strong attention to detail and accurate documentation skills.
• Ability to recognize changes in patient condition and communicate concerns promptly.
• Ability to follow detailed clinical procedures, safety protocols, and physician or nursing instructions.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism when working with patients and healthcare staff.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
• Current CPR/BLS certification and any required state or professional credentials, as applicable to the position.
