POSITION SUMMARY:

The Painter performs skilled surface preparation, painting, and finishing tasks. Applying a variety of trade methods, media, and techniques to both interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, including, but not limited to, maintaining buildings' accessibility and appearance. Assignments may include residential, academic, administrative office, health center, and all other school buildings. The Painter works independently and as part of a team of facilities staff. Assignments will vary greatly and may include multiple daily assignments. The Painter is accountable for high-quality work in support of the best interests of The Hotchkiss School, its students, and the school community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Prepares interior and exterior surfaces by cleaning, scraping, sanding, patching, puttying, and caulking; applies primers and finish coatings to plaster, drywall, wood, metal, concrete, and other substrates. Repairs plaster and drywall, matching existing textures and blending repairs with surrounding surfaces. Performs wood staining, sealing, and refinishing. Protects furnishings, fixtures, landscaping, and adjacent surfaces; controls dust, debris, and overspray and maintains clean, secure work areas. Operates and maintains painting tools and equipment, including airless sprayers, and safely uses ladders, scaffolding, and motorized lifts following required training. Follows instructions, School standards, and applicable safety procedures for coating application, material storage, waste disposal, personal protective equipment, and work at heights. Follows the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule and the School’s lead-safe work practices, including required containment, cleanup, and documentation. Participates in scheduled paint condition inspections of lead-managed buildings, documenting findings and needed repairs within the scope of assigned duties and training. Reviews and updates work orders, estimates material quantities, and communicates supply needs, work progress, and maintenance concerns to the supervisor. Coordinates assigned work with the supervisor, building occupants, and other Facilities staff to minimize disruption to School operations. Serves as a role model in maintaining appropriate standards of care for students and maintaining healthy boundaries in professional relationships with all school community members and department colleagues. Participates in required professional development, safety, compliance, and boundary training. Performs additional duties as assigned, including support for other Facilities activities and operations.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Three to five years of professional painting experience in commercial, institutional, or residential settings. Knowledge of various painting techniques and equipment. Must obtain and maintain EPA Certified Renovator certification within three months of hire. Demonstrate a strong ability to complete assigned responsibilities in a self-directed manner, while also exhibiting flexibility with team approaches to assigned work. Ability to effectively communicate and follow instructions. Must possess basic computer skills for supply ordering, utilizing work order systems, and keeping abreast with school communications and requests, via email. Ability to sustain a high degree of individual accountability, attention to detail, and flexibility with assigned work and schedule. Ability and eagerness to positively interact and communicate with students, staff, faculty and visitors from diverse backgrounds. Ability to efficiently complete assigned work within normally scheduled hours, as well as some pre-approved overtime and emergency duties as needed. Report to work during inclement weather, providing continuum and/or emergent service support when there is a direct impact on the safety, welfare, and ability of the School to continue core operations. Reliable transportation to and from work is necessary.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:

The position requires extended periods of standing and walking and frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and working overhead. The employee must frequently lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds and participate in team lifts for heavier materials. The position requires climbing stairs and ladders, and working from scaffolding and motorized lifts. Work is performed indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to dust, paint odors, chemicals, varying temperatures, and weather conditions. Required personal protective equipment must be worn as directed.
