Powhatan Elementary School, Clayton, North Carolina Teacher Assistant – SAIA (1:1) Job ID: 5507431 Position Type: Full‑time Term: 9 months Application Deadline: Posted until filled Reports To: Principal Start Date: Immediately Job Description Title: Teacher Assistant/Bus Driver Site: Powhatan Elementary School Responsibilities Provides group and individualized instruction as prescribed by the teacher. Demonstrates various instructional activities. Checks and corrects students’ work while in progress; keeps students on task. Praises and reinforces student achievement and reports progress to the teacher. Arranges classroom furnishings, prepares visual aids, duplicates materials, and reorganizes them at the end of the day. Serves as a proctor during testing; scores papers as instructed, and distributes and collects instructional materials. Attends workshops. Checks attendance and records data in health and behavior records according to regulatory requirements. Supervises students in the classroom, hallway, playground, and other locations. Creates and distributes awards for positive behavior; promotes student self‑esteem, citizenship, social skills, and respect for others. Reconciles minor student conflicts and participates in developing discipline policies. Disciplines misbehavior through approved methods and reports discipline problems and significant changes to the teacher or principal. Serves as a team player and role model, demonstrating a commitment to continuous quality improvement and supporting core values of caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, customer‑driven focus, and diversity. Serves as a Bus Driver/Bus Monitor/Sub‑Bus Driver/Sub‑Bus Monitor as required, maintaining all qualifying certifications and fulfilling duties assigned by the principal. Qualifications High‑school graduate or equivalent. Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children. Ability to solve minor problems and follow detailed written and oral instructions. Physical Requirements Communicate orally and in writing with parents, staff, and community leaders. Perform basic operational functions such as fingering, grasping, kneeling, sitting, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion.
