Clinical Pharmacist Specialist - Medical Intensive Care Unit

Overview Brown University Health – Rhode Island Hospital is recruiting a clinical pharmacist specialist for our 18‑bed medical intensive care unit (MICU). This individual will serve as an integral member of the critical care pharmacy team and the MICU and respiratory ICU team. Responsibilities include responding bedside to medical emergencies and code blue activations, leading quality improvement initiatives, stewarding antimicrobial selection, optimizing formulary and EMR workflow, providing nursing and provider education, precepting APPE, PGY1, and PGY2 learners, delivering lectures for physician assistant programs, and involvement with pulmonary hypertension and ECMO programs. Responsibilities Coordinate pharmacy clinical programs including pharmacoeconomics, pharmacotherapeutics, pharmaceutical care, and drug information services. Collaborate with multidisciplinary caregivers to monitor, assess, recommend changes to and optimize medication use. Serve as subject matter expert and real‑time go‑to resource in area of specialty. Participate in development, implementation and integration of patient‑focused medication therapy management and pharmaceutical care services. Monitor drug utilization and implement corrective strategies to optimize drug use in compliance with clinical usage guidelines. Coach professional staff on pharmacoeconomic principles, facilitating safe and cost‑effective medication use practices. Participate in short and long‑term goal development of pharmacy services aligned with institutional mission. Assist in drug budgeting and resource allocation using pharmacoeconomic principles. Maintain computerized systems, software and specialized equipment for drug information and evaluation. Coordinate medication use quality improvement programs and related database maintenance. Determine qualifications and competence of department personnel and develop tools and standards for staff competency. Orient new employees, conduct in‑service training and continuing education programs. Communicate effectively with staff, management, and customers to facilitate drug information flow. Participate in education and training of pharmacy residents, students, nurses, physicians, and medical staff; provide didactic lectures and serve as preceptor. Present formal lectures to pharmacists and health professionals. Serve as clinical faculty and give lectures for colleges and physician assistant programs. Maintain current professional competence, attend continuing education, and participate in professional organizations. Participate in risk management activities, performance improvement initiatives, quality measures, and relevant committees. Conduct and present research, prepare manuscripts and publications for professional journals and the Pharmacy website. Plan and organize priorities for effective patient care and clinical pharmacy services. Perform all duties of a pharmacist: preparing, dispensing medication, providing drug information, and other required duties. Participate in emergency code blue response and serve as supervisor‑in‑charge when assigned. Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy; advanced study preferred. Registered Pharmacist in the State of Rhode Island with current unrestricted licensure. Current AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications. Post Graduate Year 2 (PGY‑2) residency in relevant specialty, or national board certification in pharmacotherapy preferred. Clinical experience, knowledge, and development considered in lieu of formal training. Effective interpersonal, communication, organizational, and presentation skills. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems, automated dispensing technology, and related software (MS Word, Excel, Access). Work Environment and Physical Requirements Extended periods of standing and walking; use of computer and manual dexterity. Occasional travel between facilities or sites required. Independent Action Functions independently within departmental policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to Senior Clinical Pharmacist when necessary. Supervisory Responsibility None.
