ABE/ Adult Secondary Education Instructor (TEACHER ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE)

The Maryland Department of Labor Division of Workforce Development and Adult Learning is accepting applications from qualified applicants for the position to build an applicant pool for current and anticipated position vacancies. This is a professional position responsible for providing teaching and learning to residents of a correctional facility. This is an agency-specific recruitment for this specific classification and function only with the MD Department of Labor. This position could be placed in any classification within the Teacher Series. Salary and exact classification will be determined following an assessment of the selected candidate's education and MSDE Certification using the IEPP Salary Scale.

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

To create a classroom learning environment in which assigned inmate students make measurable progress toward identified educational goals as indicated by the successful completion of requirements for the Maryland Certificate of Achievement in Adult Literacy and Life Skills and/or Maryland High School Diploma.

POSITION DUTIES

Provide academic instruction in a variety of methods including whole group, small group, and individualized instruction consistent with the approved curriculum, which results in their progress toward successful completion of the requirement for the Adult Skills Certificates and/or a Maryland High School diploma. Plan lessons and organize time in advance to provide effective instruction. Use informal and formal assessment tools to provide a reliable and valid appraisal of student skills and achievement. Create a physical and interpersonal climate that is conducive to learning.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of appropriate educational credentials as determined by the Maryland State Board of Education. Experience: None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Three (3) years of classroom teaching experience. Experience working within a correctional education setting. Experience teaching adult learning principles and basic education subjects (language, reading, writing, math, science, and social studies).

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Teachers in State operated school programs are required to acquire and maintain certification to teach in the State of Maryland per Education Article, Section 6-101 of the Annotated Code and Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 13A.12.01.03B(2). Applicants recommended for appointment will be required to complete an Authorization and Verification of Credentials. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

All candidates are subject to a background check against files maintained by the Division of Unemployment Insurance (MD Labor/DUI) to determine whether any monies are owed to MD Labor/DUI as a result of unemployment insurance overpayment/fraud. Any unpaid debt may have an impact on whether or not a candidate is offered employment. All potential candidates shall be screened for security purposes prior to being offered a position which consists of fingerprinting and background investigation by CJIS-CENTRAL REPOSITORY.

SELECTION PROCESS

Successful candidates will be placed on the eligible (employment) list for at least one year.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The assessment may consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience related to the requirements of the position. The examination for this recruitment will be an evaluation and rating of the information provided on your application. The certified list will be used by Department of Labor for a period of one year.
