Life Safety Code Manager (IL/Wi Market)

Position: Life Safety Code Manager Location: Will support the IL/WI enterprise market Schedule Details: Full Time; 1st Shift (40 hours per week) Major Responsibilities: Strategic Program Leadership: Design, implement, and continuously improve enterprise-wide fire and life safety programs aligned with organizational goals and regulatory requirements to ensure consistency across diverse markets. Stakeholder Collaboration: Work with enterprise stakeholders—including Accreditation, Facilities leadership, Facility Safety Officer, and local hospital leadership—to align life safety strategies with organizational goals, ensure regulatory compliance, and support continuous improvement in safety and accreditation readiness. Represents Advocate Health in industry forums, regulatory working groups, and professional associations. Fire and Life Safety Code Consulting: Provide advanced expert-level guidance on complex fire and life safety codes, including ICC codes and NFPA standards, ensuring compliance and safety across Advocate Health facilities. Surveys and Assessments: Lead fire protection and/or life safety related surveys in hospitals, high-rises, freestanding emergency departments, and medical office buildings to identify potential risks and areas for improvement. Prepare detailed technical reports and provide actionable insights and strategic recommendations. Mentorship and Training: Mentor teammates, develop and deliver advanced training programs across the enterprise, lead onboarding and continuous development of Life Safety Code Specialists, and provide input into competency frameworks. Vendor Management: Lead regulatory vendor reviews to ensure compliance and quality service. Documentation Oversight: Oversee the enterprise documentation program, review all regulatory documentation for accuracy, correct inspection frequency, and completeness, and ensure timely upload into the compliance manager platform for each facility. Survey Readiness/Activity: Gather, review, and analyze compliance data to make recommendations and highlight areas of opportunity to leaders. Evaluate and help resolve complex regulatory-related issues and make recommendations to Facilities leaders. Partner with Facility leaders to maintain the current electronic Statement of Conditions/Basic Building Information required by The Joint Commission. Provide support to all regulatory building inspections related to life safety and assist with writing clarifications and corrective action plans. Policy and Procedure Management: Manage regulatory procedures within the computerized maintenance management system and act as subject matter expert for applicable enterprise policies. Risk Management: Manage the Facilities aspect of the Enterprise Risk Management Insurance Provider program. Develop annual goals, partner with Facilities leadership to evaluate recommendations, and standardize engineering recommendations. Committee Participation: Co-chair and/or participate in the Enterprise Regulatory and Safety Council and represent life safety in other councils and cross‑functional committees as needed. Innovation & Technology: Champion the use of advanced technologies such as BlueBeam to enhance compliance tracking and reporting. Participate in department initiatives. Licensure, Registration, And/or Certification Required: Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS), or Certified Life Safety Specialist for Health Care Facility Managers (CLSS‑HC), or Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM), or other related industry certifications required within 1 year of hire. Education Required: Bachelor's degree in engineering, safety management, risk management, occupational safety, public health or related field, or equivalent knowledge obtained through years of experience related to life safety management. Experience Required: Minimum of 10 years experience as a Facilities professional in a healthcare setting and/or experience in hospital regulatory compliance, safety, or related field. Proven experience leading enterprise‑level programs. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required: Advanced knowledge of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, fire protection systems, and safety systems. Expert technical knowledge of healthcare‑specific fire safety codes and standards (e.g., CMS, TJC, NFPA 101, NFPA 99, ICC). Advanced proficiency of relevant software including BlueBeam, Microsoft Office Suite, and facilities Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Ability to interpret complex technical drawings and regulatory documentation. Ability to review technical information and processes, identify root‑cause problems or areas needing improvement, and formulate effective and efficient solutions. Strong analytical, strategic planning, and project management skills. Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams and cultivate strong internal and external relationships. Demonstrated success in cross‑functional collaboration and change management. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Ability to conduct site inspections, which may include climbing ladders and accessing spaces such as mechanical rooms, hot locations, and both inside and outside of facilities. Work involves exposure to construction sites and operational healthcare facilities. Ability and willingness to travel up to 35% of the time as dictated by business needs. Valid driver’s license required. Preferred Requirements: Strongly prefer a bachelor’s degree in engineering, facility management, or related field. Five years of experience maintaining fire/life safety equipment or programs. Experience leading enterprise‑wide regulatory programs and mentoring professional staff. Active membership in a recognized professional organization demonstrating ongoing commitment to professional development and staying current with industry standards and practices.
