Position Summary
The Maintenance Technician II and III are experienced, journey-level professionals responsible for the independent diagnosis, repair, and ongoing reliability of bakery production equipment and facility systems. Both roles build on foundational maintenance skills and play an active part in preventive and corrective maintenance activities, vendor coordination, parts procurement, and the mentorship of less experienced team members.
The Maintenance Technician II operates independently across a broad range of mechanical and electrical systems, serving as a knowledgeable resource for Maintenance Technician I staff while ensuring equipment uptime and documentation standards are consistently met.
The Maintenance Technician III is the facility's foremost technical expert — the highest individual contributor on the maintenance team — with specialized proficiency in advanced controls, PLC programming, robotics, and automation systems. This role resolves complex failures that exceed the scope of Maintenance Technician I and II capabilities, leads capital project execution, drives equipment reliability strategy, and elevates the technical competency of the entire maintenance organization. The Maintenance Technician III is a self-directed problem solver whose expertise directly impacts production uptime, equipment longevity, and the facility's capacity to adopt emerging automation technologies.
Requirements:Key Responsibilities
Maintenance Technician II & III
- Independently diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical failures on bakery production equipment including mixers, dividers, molders, ovens, proofers, slicers, and packaging machinery.
- Execute and oversee preventive maintenance schedules, ensuring tasks are completed accurately, on time, and documented in the CMMS.
- Troubleshoot equipment issues using schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and diagnostic tools; identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Coordinate with equipment vendors and service contractors for specialized repairs, warranty work, and technical support; manage vendor access and on-site activity.
- Identify, source, and request parts and supplies; maintain accurate records of parts used and current inventory levels to minimize downtime.
- Assist in the training and mentoring of Maintenance Technician I staff, providing guidance on procedures, safety, and best practices.
- Participate in equipment improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities to enhance reliability, reduce waste, and improve maintenance efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with all food safety, GMP, OSHA, and company safety standards during all maintenance activities.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns during production hours and work to restore operations with minimal disruption.
- Maintain detailed and accurate work order records, equipment histories, and parts documentation.
Maintenance Technician III (additional)
- Serve as the highest-level technical resource for the most complex mechanical, electrical, electronic, and controls-related failures, resolving issues that exceed the scope of Technician I and II capabilities.
- Program, configure, modify, and troubleshoot PLC systems, HMI interfaces, and distributed control systems (DCS); develop and maintain PLC program libraries, documentation, and version control practices.
- Diagnose and repair electronic control systems including servo drives, variable frequency drives (VFDs), motion controllers, sensors, vision systems, and process instrumentation at the component level.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair robotic systems used in bakery production and packaging operations; coordinate with robot OEMs and integrators for advanced support, program updates, and system modifications.
- Interpret complex schematics, ladder logic, and network communication diagrams to perform advanced electrical troubleshooting.
- Design, fabricate, and modify mechanical components, fixtures, guards, and structural supports using welding, machining, and metal fabrication techniques.
- Act as lead technician in the execution of capital improvement and equipment installation projects, including contractor coordination, commissioning, startup, and as-built documentation.
- Develop and continuously refine preventive and predictive maintenance programs using reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) principles, CMMS data, and condition-monitoring techniques.
- Conduct advanced root cause analysis (RCA) on chronic or high-impact equipment failures; implement sustainable corrective actions and track measurable outcomes.
- Provide technical mentorship and hands-on training to Technician I and II staff in controls, electronics, and advanced troubleshooting methods.
- Collaborate with operations, engineering, quality, and food safety teams on equipment changes, automation upgrades, new product introductions, and facility modifications.
- Evaluate emerging technologies, automation solutions, and maintenance tools to support continuous improvement in reliability, efficiency, and operating cost.
- Maintain thorough documentation of PLC programs, electrical and controls as-builts, robot programs, fabrication drawings, project records, and equipment modification histories.
- Ensure all work meets applicable food safety, GMP, OSHA, NEC, and company safety and regulatory requirements.
