The role involves supervising and directing the activities of various levels of assigned nursing staff. Coordination of care with other disciplines is essential while utilizing critical thinking, professional and supervisory discretion, and independent judgment. The nurse collects relevant data pertinent to the patient's health or situation. Assessment data is analyzed to determine diagnosis and care issues. A plan is developed that prescribes interventions to attain outcomes. The plan is implemented, care delivery is coordinated, and strategies to promote health and a safe environment are employed. Progress toward attaining outcomes is evaluated. Outcomes for the patient or the patient's situation are identified. Collaboration with the patient, family, and healthcare providers is key in providing patient care in a safe, healing, humane, and caring environment. The nurse provides learning opportunities for patients and family members as well as team members. Direct health information is provided to patients, families, and treatment teams. Participation in discharge planning ensures continuity of care. Duties of healthcare team members are delegated appropriately and coordinated. Other job-related duties may be assigned as needed.
