Maintain accountability for the management of all respiratory care services required by assigned patients. Accept and respond to written and verbal physician orders, participate in emergency and "code" situations, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, conduct pulmonary assessments, administer and monitor patients’ response to bronchodilators, perform blood gas and electrolyte analyses, and manage patients on mechanical ventilation per physician order and approved weaning protocol. Demonstrate clinical competence within the scope of a Respiratory Care Practitioner in the state of Illinois. Keep knowledge and skills current for the respiratory needs of patients, including equipment, procedures, and medications. Obtain necessary information and demonstrate competence before implementing new or unfamiliar care practices. Carry out medical treatment plans by implementing physician orders for respiratory care. Seek clarification on any unclear or questionable orders by consulting with the ordering or on‑call physician. If unresolved, refer the question to the Lead RCP, Clinical Supervisor, Manager, or appropriate higher authorities. Perform blood gas and electrolyte analysis as ordered by physician, following hospital policies. Report problems in specimen management or equipment operation to the lead RCP or department director. Assist in the assembly, disassembly, cleaning, and processing of respiratory therapy equipment according to department policies. Work in a team environment with all members of the healthcare team to provide patient‑centered care. Collaborate with other disciplines to define individualized problem lists, interventions, and care goals. Participate in staffing meetings to discuss patient progress and revise goals. Assess patients’ progress according to established goals and initiate appropriate actions. Document thoroughly in Meditech regarding patient condition and interventions performed. Report significant information to all appropriate individuals during shift changes and critical updates. Coordinate with other disciplines and the care coordinator to ensure timely and effective interventions and patient care, facilitating patient and family readiness for discharge. Maintain patient and family confidentiality and comply with applicable laws and regulations related to healthcare workers, including pain management, abuse reporting, and abuse prevention. Observe and report the emotional and spiritual needs of patients and assist in providing supportive care to them and their families. Provide individualized clinical care based on patient age, developmental status, and functional level. Facilitate patient and family participation in care. Demonstrate appropriate psychosocial interventions and evaluate environmental safety to provide a safe clinical environment. Report unsafe conditions and use appropriate safe work practices such as proper body mechanics and PPE. Adhere to infection control precautions and ensure that other healthcare workers and visitors have adequate protective equipment when interacting with patients under care. Participate in department performance improvement activities, identify opportunities to improve patient safety, department operations, or respiratory care practices, and bring them to the attention of the Lead RCP or department manager or director. Join department and facility committees and performance improvement teams. Implement all applicable patient safety components. Maintain effective colleague relationships and consistently professional, respectful communication. Actively participate in the educational development of healthcare students and the formal and informal education of other team members. Orient and precept new RCPs and act as preceptor for agency therapists as assigned. Participate in staff meetings and continuing education activities. Provide information and feedback on related clinical and professional topics. Meet all employee requirements (PPD, CPR, annual review, performance evaluation, etc.) by completing required activities before expiration or due dates. Requirements and Characteristics Skills & Abilities (Minimum) Thorough knowledge of respiratory care procedures, equipment, and pharmacological agents for therapy. Clinical knowledge and technical skills to work with high‑technology equipment and computers. Interpersonal skills to positively interact with patients, families, physicians, and health‑care team members. Physical ability for constant standing, walking, lifting, and moving patients and equipment. Ability to perform effectively under stressful or emergency situations. Ability to work in a team setting for patient‑centered care. Knowledge & Experience (Minimum) Recent acute patient care experience, including adult patients requiring mechanical ventilation. Clinical competence documented by references based on respiratory care experience and education. License / Certification (Minimum) Completion of an AMA‑approved respiratory therapy program. Certification (CRT) or registration (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care, or eligible to take the CRT exam within 6 months of hire. Must pass exam to retain employment as an RCP. Current CPR certification. ACLS certification preferred. Working Conditions Work is performed in a patient care environment and may be exposed to hazardous materials, including bloodborne pathogens and medical gases under pressure. Additional Note This role is eligible for a $7,500 sign‑on bonus, pro‑rated for positions less than full‑time (0.9 FTE). Registry positions are not bonus‑eligible.
