Department IU HEALTH CENTER (BA-IUHC-IUBLA) Department Information No job description available Job Summary Department Specific Responsibilities Performs a variety of clinical laboratory diagnostic tests inmultiple disciplines to aid in the diagnosis and treatment ofpatients in the Indiana University Student Health Center(IUHC). Covers a variety of general laboratory operations includingtechnical and diagnostic equipment operation, utilization ofsoftware programs, quality control testing, patient specimencollection, and promotion of quality improvement in thelaboratory. Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots diagnostic instrumentsto perform testing in the areas of microbiology, hematology,chemistry, serology, molecular, and urinalysis. Operatse technical equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges,automated and manual pipets, timers, and other items essential to avariety of laboratory tasks. Utilizes computer software systems (Laboratory InformationSystems (LIS) and Electronic Health Record (EHR) to order tests,facilitates specimen collection, reports results to providers, andother related functions to support laboratory operations. Processes and packages patient specimens for shipping. Monitors and keeps laboratory supplies at sufficient levels tosustain patient testing needs. Completes reagent/equipment performance validations asrequired. Evaluates quality control results, reports, and statisticaldata for issues and trends taking corrective action(s), ifneeded. Prints monthly QC and Maintenance reports for laboratorymanager's final review. Submits monthly QC data to interlaboratory reportingentities. Coordinates and/or perform Proficiency Testing (PT)analyses. Responds quickly to visual / audible alarms multitasking asnecessary during heavy workload periods striving to meet expectedturnaround times. Demonstrates positive customer service skills to greet patientspresenting to the laboratory for specimen collection(s). Maintains professionalism through a variety of patient andcoworker interactions. Performs phlebotomy and other specimen collection procedures onpatients. Abides by safety guidelines to protect self and patients fromexposure to chemical hazards and biohazards by wearing appropriatePersonal Protective Equipment (PPE) and performing hand hygienefrequently. Assists with care of patients during episodes of fainting orother acute reactions stemming from specimen collection. Completes training and maintain certification in BLS (BasicLife Support). Participates in meetings and activities geared to improvepatient care, fulfill organizational strategic goals, andfacilitate staff engagement efforts. Collaborates with the laboratory manager to prepare forbi-annual COLA accreditation inspections. Completes annual competency assessment as required byCLIA/COLA. Maintains ASCP, or equivalent, certification status. Retains technical knowledge and acquire new knowledge throughContinuing Education accepted by the American Society of ClinicalPathology (ASCP). General Responsibilities Acts as lead technologist, overseeing laboratoryactivities. Demonstrates, mentors, provides technical guidance andexpertise, and acts as a resource to other staff pertaining totesting performed. Resolves testing technical problems and takes remedial actionwhenever tests deviate from laboratory procedure. Performs advanced quality control analysis, review, andtroubleshooting. Performs, documents, and troubleshoots advanced maintenance andrepairs to ensure optimal performance of instrumentation. Creates and updates procedures of the laboratory according toaccreditation requirements. Trains new employees and performs competency assessments. Coordinates and oversees laboratory supply ordering andmaintains inventory (e.g. disposes of expired reagents). Assists in preparation for accreditation inspections. Maintains technical knowledge and acquire new knowledge throughcontinuing education. Performs phlebotomy, specimen collection, and clerical dutiesas needed. Qualifications Combinations of related education and experience may beconsidered. Education beyond the minimum required may besubstituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimumrequired may be substituted for education. Work Location Indiana University Bloomington This is an in person position Advertised Salary Up to $74,000.00 on an annualized basis. Work Hours Standard hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm.
