RN Labor and Delivery

Job Summary:


The Registered Nurse in Labor and Delivery provides skilled nursing care within a high-risk, high-acuity, and fast-paced environment. This role involves managing labor and delivery patients, providing newborn care during and after delivery, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. The nurse is expected to have extensive experience in high-risk OB settings, including electronic fetal monitoring and emergency procedures, while adhering to established clinical guidelines and protocols.

Responsibilities:

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to laboring and delivering patients, including high-risk cases.
• Function as Baby Nurse during delivery, providing immediate newborn care until transfer to postpartum.
• Perform newborn assessments, including eyes, thighs, and administration of Vitamin K injections.
• Manage patient care in postpartum and antepartum units and float to sister facilities as needed.
• Collaborate with midwifery clients, private OBs, adult recovery services, and community care clinics.
• Utilize EPIC electronic medical records and perform electronic fetal monitoring.
• Follow AWHONN guidelines for staffing and clinical procedures.
• Administer medications such as Heparin, Insulin, and Magnesium Sulfate as required.
• Maintain high standards of patient safety and clinical competence in a high-volume setting.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Minimum 2 years of experience in a high-acuity, high-paced labor and delivery environment; 3-5 years preferred with high-risk OB experience.
• Current Registered Nurse license with active compact license status.
• Proof of current certifications: BLS, Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
• Experience with electronic fetal monitoring and EPIC electronic health records.
• Ability to circulate and provide newborn care including eye care and Vitamin K injections.
• Clinical supervisory references demonstrating competency and leadership.
• Must pass clinical review and provide proof of certifications with application.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• AWHONN Advanced and Intermediate certifications.
• Experience working with midwifery and private OB practices.

Special Considerations:

• Must be able to float between postpartum, antepartum, and sister facilities providing mother/baby care.
• Work in a high-volume setting averaging 500-600 deliveries per month with 31 beds.
• Strong emphasis on not screening candidates without required newborn care and circulating skills.
• Compliance with staffing guidelines per AWHONN.
• Pre-approved time off evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Scheduling:

• Work schedule is posted every 6 weeks to meet unit needs.
• Work every other weekend and holidays as needed.
• Shift assignments include day and night shifts in a 24/7 labor and delivery environment.
