Job Summary The Registered Nurse works in the Intensive Care Units of SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, assessing, managing, directing, and providing nursing care at each patient’s hospital stay while coordinating with interdisciplinary teams. Responsibilities Comprehensive Nursing Assessment Perform age‑appropriate admission or transfer assessments. Document findings accurately and completely. Assess post‑op and post‑invasive procedure patients. Document education and discharge needs of patients and families. Conduct patient reassessments and record pertinent observations. Plan of Care Development Identify short‑ and long‑term goals based on assessment data. Formulate nursing interventions to achieve desired outcomes. Incorporate evidence‑based practice into care plans and documentation. Nursing Interventions & Communication Collaborate with the health team to coordinate daily care plans. Document and communicate patient care, including accurate handoff reports. Administer medications and manage IV fluids and parenteral nutrition. Complete referrals, request consultations, and provide patient/family education. Clarify and implement physician orders promptly. Assist physicians with procedures and document telephone or verbal orders. Documentation & Evaluation Document and evaluate effectiveness of care and patient/family education. Modify care plans as needed and report significant changes to physicians. Identify problems, gather data, and suggest solutions for improvement. Report variations in care in accordance with the occurrence reporting policy. Specialized Care Restraint care: evaluate alternatives, apply restraints correctly, monitor response, provide necessary care, and document usage. Pain management: assess pain, incorporate cultural/spiritual beliefs, implement preventive techniques, and involve patients/families in plan development. Abuse assessment: recognize abuse criteria, report signs, and take actions to support patient safety. Professional Practice & Quality Improvement Maintain compliance with all quality and performance standards. Participate in learning experiences and keep knowledge current. Engage in committees, governance, and unit‑based practice councils. Respond positively to change and support peers in adapting to new demands. Collaboration & Communication Orient and precept new employees as needed. Maintain a collaborative team approach and function as a resource for staff, patients, families, and medical staff. Delegate care appropriately and redirect staff when plans change. Communicate care plans precisely and professionally. Supervise and teach students or new staff nurses. Safety & Infection Control Practice standard precautions and dispose of hazardous waste correctly. Maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment. Follow hand hygiene, use safe patient handling equipment, and keep noise to a minimum. Complete annual mandatory training: licensing, BLS/HI, TB screening, influenza vaccination, ethics, safety, information security, abuse & neglect, blood‑borne pathogens, and competency requirements. Service Excellence Provide respectful, courteous care and meet physical, spiritual, psychological, and emotional needs. Ensure prompt response to call lights and patient requests. Maintain confidentiality, listen actively, and explain procedures clearly. Share knowledge with other departments to promote workflow and continuity. Use resources wisely and recommend changes that improve efficiency. Performance Improvement Assist in developing and implementing unit goals. Remain current with evidence‑based initiatives. Identify improvement opportunities, participate in data collection, and suggest solutions. Lead or participate in performance improvement teams and review outcomes. Engage in nursing research and department/hospital improvement activities. Age‑Appropriate Care Demonstrate knowledge of normal growth and development for the age group served. Assess and interpret age‑specific data to identify patient needs. Use communication skills suitable to the age group. Involve family or significant others in decision‑making. Provide service needed for the age group in the department. Cost‑Effective Services Use resources efficiently, recommend practice changes, and document chargeable supplies. Prioritize responsibilities and complete work on time. Utilize non‑clinical time for constructive tasks such as chart audits and mandatory education. Minimum Education and Experience Licensed Registered Nurse in the state of Missouri. One (1) year of registered nurse experience required. Working Conditions May be exposed to blood‑borne diseases and other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries, and illness. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations, emergency and crisis situations, and irregular hours. Physical Requirements Occasional prolonged standing and walking. Occasional lifting, positioning, pushing and/or transferring patients. Occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching. Required Licensure & Certifications Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) – American Heart Association (AHA). Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed by the state of Missouri Division of Professional Registration. Advanced Life Support (ALS) – American Heart Association (AHA).
