In-Home Caregiver Job Description

Position Title: In-Home Caregiver
Department: Client Services
Reports To: Service Supervisor and/or Agency Director
Employment Status: Full-Time, Part-Time, or As Needed
Location: Client Homes and Community Settings

Position Summary

The In-Home Caregiver provides non-medical personal assistance, companionship, supervision, and support to clients in their homes. The caregiver helps clients maintain their independence, comfort, dignity, and safety while completing assigned services according to the client’s plan of care.

The In-Home Caregiver must provide dependable, respectful, compassionate, and professional care while following all policies and procedures of The Wright Kind of Care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The In-Home Caregiver may be responsible for:

• Assisting clients with bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and personal hygiene.
• Helping clients with walking, positioning, transfers, and mobility as permitted by the agency.
• Providing companionship, conversation, encouragement, and emotional support.
• Preparing simple meals and snacks according to the client’s preferences and dietary instructions.
• Assisting with feeding when included in the client’s plan of care.
• Performing light housekeeping, including laundry, dishes, changing bed linens, sweeping, and cleaning the client’s immediate living area.
• Providing medication reminders without administering medications.
• Assisting clients with errands, grocery shopping, and community activities when authorized.
• Accompanying clients to appointments when included in the service plan.
• Observing the client’s physical condition, behavior, mood, and home environment.
• Promptly reporting changes in the client’s condition, safety concerns, incidents, injuries, complaints, or suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
• Following infection-control procedures, standard precautions, and bloodborne pathogen safety requirements.
• Maintaining accurate and timely service notes, time records, incident reports, and other required documentation.
• Protecting client privacy and maintaining confidentiality.
• Following the client’s plan of care and completing only authorized duties.
• Treating clients, family members, coworkers, and community partners with dignity and respect.
• Arriving on time and remaining with the client for the entire scheduled shift.
• Notifying the supervisor immediately when unable to report for an assigned shift.
• Participating in orientation, competency evaluations, in-service education, and required annual training.
• Following emergency procedures and contacting the appropriate supervisor when assistance is needed.
• Performing other non-medical caregiving duties assigned by the Service Supervisor or Agency Director.

Caregiver Limitations

The In-Home Caregiver may not:

• Diagnose or treat medical conditions.
• Administer medications, injections, or medical treatments unless separately qualified and specifically authorized by law and agency policy.
• Perform duties that are not listed in the client’s plan of care.
• Make changes to the client’s care plan without authorization.
• Borrow money from clients or accept inappropriate gifts.
• Use a client’s property, vehicle, credit cards, accounts, or personal information for unauthorized purposes.
• Discuss confidential client information with unauthorized individuals.
• Sleep during a shift unless specifically authorized as part of an overnight assignment.

Minimum Qualifications

The applicant must:

• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Have the ability to read, write, speak, and understand instructions.
• Demonstrate the ability to provide safe and compassionate care.
• Successfully complete the agency’s employment application and interview process.
• Successfully complete required criminal background and registry checks.
• Provide acceptable employment or personal references.
• Complete required orientation, competency verification, and training.
• Provide required tuberculosis screening documentation.
• Complete bloodborne pathogens and infection-control training.
• Provide Hepatitis B vaccination documentation or sign a declination form.
• Possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record when transportation is part of the job.
• Maintain reliable transportation and automobile insurance when required.
• Maintain CPR and First Aid certification when required by the agency or client assignment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous caregiving, childcare, home care, healthcare, or direct-support experience.
• Experience assisting older adults, children, or individuals with disabilities.
• CPR and First Aid certification.
• Personal Care Assistant, Home Health Aide, Certified Nursing Assistant, or other relevant training.

Physical Requirements

The caregiver must be able to:

• Stand, walk, bend, reach, kneel, and sit for extended periods.
• Assist clients with mobility and transfers when trained and authorized.
• Lift or move the amount required for the assigned client with assistance or approved equipment when necessary.
• Perform light housekeeping and meal-preparation duties.
• Respond appropriately during emergencies.
• Work in different home environments, including homes with pets, stairs, or limited space.

Professional Conduct

The In-Home Caregiver is expected to:

• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
• Wear clean and appropriate clothing or the required agency uniform.
• Display agency identification when required.
• Avoid personal phone use while providing client care, except during emergencies or approved breaks.
• Refrain from smoking, vaping, alcohol use, illegal drug use, or impairment during working hours.
• Follow all client rights, privacy, safety, and nondiscrimination requirements.
• Report suspected abuse, neglect, exploitation, unsafe conditions, or policy violations immediately.

Work Schedule

Work schedules may include weekdays, evenings, weekends, holidays, overnight shifts, and short-notice assignments. Hours are based on client needs and do not guarantee a specific number of weekly hours.
