Principal Scientist, Upstream Process Development Group Lead

Merck seeks a Principal Scientist to lead upstream bioprocess development for biologics in the Biologics Process Research & Development group. The role involves driving strategic initiatives, designing scalable cell-culture processes, and directing a team of 3-5 scientists while collaborating across functions to advance drug candidates through development and commercialization.

Responsibilities

• Lead upstream process development strategy and drive innovation across biologics pipeline
• Design, execute, and direct cell-culture process development from early to late-stage programs
• Develop robust, scalable bioprocesses and prepare process characterization for regulatory submissions
• Supervise 3-5 scientists, guide their professional development, and mentor expertise sharing across teams
• Evaluate emerging technologies and industry best practices to improve process efficiency and cost-effectiveness

Requirements

• Ph.D. with 10+ years or MS with 12+ years industry experience in chemical/biochemical engineering or related field
• Deep expertise in cell-culture process development, fed-batch systems, and bioreactor scale-up
• Track record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations in upstream bioprocessing
• Knowledge of biologics CMC development and regulatory pathways
• Demonstrated scientific leadership with measurable impact across multiple programs
• Experience supervising and mentoring cross-functional teams in matrixed environments
• Strong problem-solving and prioritization skills in fast-paced, complex settings
