Senior Principal Scientist, Upstream Process Development Group Lead

Merck seeks a Senior Principal Scientist to lead upstream bioprocess development for the Biologics platform. This role combines scientific expertise in cell-culture processes with strategic leadership, overseeing innovation across pipeline projects and directing a team of 3-5 scientists.
Responsibilities
- Drive innovation and strategy for upstream bioprocessing across the biologics pipeline
- Lead development of robust, scalable cell-culture processes for clinical and commercial stage candidates
- Identify and resolve technical challenges in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams
- Supervise and mentor 3-5 scientists; guide career development and team cohesion
- Evaluate emerging technologies and industry practices to improve process efficiency and cost-effectiveness
Requirements
- Ph.D. with 10+ years industry experience, or MS with 12+ years, or BS with 14+ years in chemical/biochemical engineering
- Deep expertise in cell-culture process development, fed-batch systems, bioreactor scale-up, and cell metabolism
- Track record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations in upstream bioprocessing
- Knowledge of biologics CMC development and regulatory pathways
- Demonstrated scientific leadership with measurable project impacts across multiple programs
- Experience leading cross-functional, matrixed teams in complex, fast-paced environments
- Strong supervisory and mentoring capabilities; excellent communication skills
