POLICE OFFICER 2214
City of Los Angeles
Annual Salary $82,893 to $87,424 and $93,730 to $127,660 Duties As a sworn member of the Los Angeles Police Department, a Police Officer maintains order, enforces laws and ordinances, protects life and property, works with neighborhood associations and community members as a planner, community organizer, problem solver and information link; issues citations, makes arrests, prepares reports, and provides information to the public and departmental units; and does related work. Qualifications At least 20 years of age at the time of application and 21 years of age by police academy graduation. Graduation from a U.S. high school, G.E.D., or equivalent from a U.S. institution, or a California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) certificate is required. A two- or four‑year college degree from an accredited U.S. or foreign institution may substitute the high school requirement. Documentation demonstrating accreditation must be submitted prior to the written test. Be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. A valid Class C driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is required at the time of appointment. Applicants with three or more moving violations and/or at‑fault accidents, or a major moving violation conviction within the last 36 months, may be disqualified. Meet or be able to meet all standards set by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (CA POST) for the position of Police Officer. History of illegal drug use may be evaluated during the background investigation and can result in disqualification depending on substance type, frequency, and recency. Because this class is designated Safety Sensitive, a drug and alcohol screening test shall be required prior to appointment and during employment. Must comply with all current Department grooming and appearance policies, including but not limited to tattoos or branding policies. Provide proof of qualifying U.S. high‑school diploma or college transcripts at the time of filing. Foreign high‑school diplomas are not accepted. Foreign college degrees must be evaluated for U.S. educational equivalency and a credential‑evaluation report from NACES or AICE must be attached before submitting the application. Process Notes All applicants must complete the entry‑level Peace Officer Supplemental Questionnaire at the time of filing. Failure to complete this questionnaire results in disqualification. Review the “Essential Duties and Work Conditions for Entry‑level Peace Officers” for detailed information. The document is available online. Applicants who have been decertified by the California POST Commission, or who are ineligible to serve as a peace officer under California law, will be disqualified. Applicants must retain validity of their certification and may be required to re‑qualify for POST certification before employment. All applicants must attach required documents to the online application at the time of filing; failure to do so results in disqualification. Selection Process The examination consists of a qualifying multiple‑choice test, a qualifying Physical Abilities Test (PAT), and an interview. The multiple‑choice test evaluates judgment, decision making, and written communication. The PAT evaluates physical capabilities through sit‑ups, sprint, push‑ups, and a 1.5‑mile run. The interview evaluates experience, judgment, stress tolerance, job interest, interpersonal skills, community relations, and communication skills. Scores for the multiple‑choice test and the interview do not expire. The PAT score expires after 12 months. Candidates may be invited for remote testing if they are unable to appear in person, with required technology and a private environment. All test components may be waived only under specific circumstances described in the job bulletin. Background Investigation The investigation begins with a Personal History Statement and includes fingerprinting, background interview, and checks of employment, police, financial, education, and military records. A polygraph exam may be required. Findings are valid for 12 months. Physical Abilities Test Physical requirements include excellent health, appropriate body weight, vision standards, and the ability to complete academy training and police work. A cardiac stress test may be required. Medical & Psychological Evaluation Includes a thorough medical evaluation by a City physician and a psychological evaluation by a City psychologist. Results are valid for up to 24 months for written tests and 12 months for oral interviews. Training All new officers attend a six‑month, 40‑hour per week training and orientation program with full pay. Assignments Employees receive regular appointments as Police Officers and begin an eighteen‑month probationary period. After academy completion, assignments are made to one of 21 geographical patrol divisions. Benefits Annual paid vacations, holidays, medical and dental plans, sick leave, and a retirement system.
