Position Overview: Essex Meadows is seeking a hospitality-focused Director of Nursing to join our team! This opening comes as we prepare for the upcoming retirement of our current DON, who has served with dedication for 10 years and is retiring in August. Our goal is to onboard the new Director by mid-summer, allowing for a smooth transition and training period. The DON is responsible for the overall supervision, provision, and quality of nursing care in our 45-bed Health Center. This role is responsible for the selection, training, discipline and supervision for all nursing related Health Center personnel. The DON is also responsible for overseeing the procurement of appropriate supplies and equipment and operating within the departmental budget. Responsibilities: Develop, organize and operate nursing services and assistance-in-living services for the Health Center. Coordinate nursing services for the Health Center residents including the procurement of outside sources such as Home Health Care Services, private duty, hospice, rehabilitation services, psychological, etc. Coordinate and direct the total planning for nursing services including a staffing plan of the number and levels of licensed and certified nurses' aides to be employed. Recruit and select nursing services personnel with the Administrator’s approval. Develop and maintain a schedule of daily rounds and assignments of duties for all nursing staff to assure 24-hour coverage. Participate in the coordination of resident care services through departmental staff meetings. Participate in new staff orientation programs. Coordinate with the Staff Development Nurse for required in-service education programs. Utilize vendors, consultants, and the medical community as appropriate. Maintain clinical skills through nursing education related to geriatrics. Ensure significant clinical developments of residents are reported to their physicians and necessary parties. Review nursing requirements of each resident admitted to the Health Center. Complete written probationary and annual evaluations of all nursing staff. Appoint a nurse to act in his/her behalf during temporary absences. Establish procedures to ensure valid and current licenses for nursing personnel. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. Maintain high visibility with residents in the Health Center and apartment residents. Evaluate all admissions for appropriate level of care and/or for Medicare coverage/denial. Oversee the ordering of all nursing supplies and submit quarterly inventory to accounting. Routinely inspect medical records for accuracy. Serve 'on call' on weekends and after normal working hours. Serve as Manager on Duty on scheduled weekends. Qualifications: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Registered nurse with a current license in Connecticut. Two years' experience in geriatric nursing and/or B.S. Degree in nursing. Participation in professional organizations dealing primarily in geriatrics preferred. Minimum of two years nursing administration experience, preferably in a long-term care setting. Ability to communicate effectively with residents, families, and staff, and work well under pressure. Commitment to excellence in resident care and strong rehabilitative/restorative nursing orientation.
