Staff Attorney

Job Title: Staff Attorney – Professional Licensing Division Compensation: $75,000 – $85,000 DOE, BOE Position Summary The Staff Attorney works under broad supervision providing legal advice and services to the Secretary of State’s Professional Licensing Board Division. Duties include collaborating with the PLB Director, other legal staff, and executive directors of all licensing boards to support board administration, draft and negotiate consent orders, review and draft responses to Open Records Requests, offer counsel on rule development, conduct legal research, and assist with any other requested legal matters. Key Responsibilities Draft consent orders for all professional licensing boards. Research and draft memoranda on Georgia law concerning professional licensing. Provide analysis, recommendations, and advice to the General Counsel, PLB Director, and executive directors. Review and respond to Open Records Requests. Monitor and implement administrative processes to ensure compliance with laws and regulations. Draft new or amended legislation or regulations and review proposed legislation, providing analysis to General Counsel and agency legislative staff. Draft correspondence to licensees. Review investigative reports and identify areas requiring further investigation. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong teamwork and independent work skills. Comprehensive knowledge of statutes, court decisions, state and federal laws, regulations, and departmental policies. Legal research, analysis, and writing proficiency. Familiarity with administrative regulation, legislative drafting, and the legislative process. Understanding of government operations. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Proficiency in technical legal writing and contract law. Occupational licensing and administrative law knowledge. Analytical ability to organize facts and present clear oral and written arguments. Ability to advise administrators on legal matters, assess compliance, and identify investigative avenues. Strong organizational skills. Supervision Requirements The Staff Attorney role is non‑supervisory. Minimum Qualifications Minimum one year of legal experience (preferred). Excellent writing, communication, and analytical skills. Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of statutes and regulations administered by the PLB Division. Experience analyzing and investigating complex business transactions and/or participating in criminal, civil, or administrative proceedings. Education Requirements Graduate of an accredited law school with a J.D. and licensed to practice law in Georgia. Must be in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia. Candidates may be eligible to sit for the Georgia Bar exam with a promise to pass and obtain licensure within one year of hiring, or possess one year of relevant legal experience.
