Position Summary We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Part‑Time Speech Language Pathologist Program Specialist – Brooklyn. In this role, the successful candidate develops and implements dysphagia clinical education for all staff across all sites. Responsibilities include coordinating patient care, training programs and research endeavors for the dysphagia specialty program with the Speech Pathology department, demonstrating excellent communication, teamwork and a leadership role in the development of the dysphagia program. The candidate delegates and monitors responsibilities assigned to support staff and students, participates in performance improvement activities, and attends all mandatory staff education programs. Job Responsibilities ASSESSMENT: Initial Assessment and Evaluation. Reviews medical charts to ascertain important medical information and clarifies referral/treatment orders if necessary for unfamiliar diagnosis. Selects appropriate SLP assessment tools and methods in order to accurately determine the patient's status for developing an optimal treatment plan. Demonstrates effective clinical decision‑making and implements changes/adaptations to the SLP treatment plan when appropriate. OTHER: Maintains a professional appearance and demonstrates appropriate professionalism during job performance. Takes on additional patient related responsibilities as requested by supervisor. Performs performance appraisals on dysphagia therapists as needed. Identifies new equipment that would facilitate programmatic growth and development. Assists with equipment and unit maintenance. Demonstrates initiative to specialty area of practice outside NYU Langone Health. Monitors dysphagia protocols and develops any new quality improvement projects for all sites. LEADERSHIP: Exhibits ancillary Speech Pathology leadership in the area of dysphagia in regards to producing evidence‑based practices, department research initiatives, department and unit specific in‑services, professional publications in specialty areas and new program development in the dysphagia field. Works in conjunction with staff and management on performance improvement and clinical research projects that will benefit the unit and/or the department. Assists in the development of PI initiatives and maintaining regulatory compliance and accreditations throughout the department and across all sites. DOCUMENTATION: Completes all required documentation for patient care and reimbursement within a prescribed timely manner as per departmental standards. Completes and plans all required documentation in the medical chart as required by Department guidelines and JACHO/CARF requirements. Clinical documentation is thorough and complete using appropriate medical and clinical terminology. Conducts chart reviews and audits for dysphagia patients. PARTICIPATION: Assists rehabilitation management in development and implementation of protocols for assessment and therapeutic modalities for dysphagia patients. Employee will serve as primary consultant for complicated cases related to specialty. Assists with orientation of new employees and mentors new staff. Demonstrates a positive and constructive attitude by recommending ideas for program development or departmental improvement. Participates in meetings/rounds, patient care and administrative conferences and committees as assigned. Monitors related protocols and develops any new quality improvement projects for all sites. Is able to successfully facilitate professional relationships with management team, including immediate supervisors. Participates in team meetings, case conferences and committees as assigned. ORGANIZATION: Responsible for a certain level of patient care productivity as indicated by individual unit procedures. Demonstrates the ability to provide expected patient contact as indicated by productivity reports and patient contact analysis. SUPERVISION: Provides mentoring to their specific area of specialty such as with staff treating dysphagia patients (adult/pediatric) at all sites. Clinical oversight of Speech Language Pathology staff and interns. Provides feedback to management on staff's skills or any performance that outlines strength and areas of improvement. Coordinates Speech Language Pathology patient care rendered across all sites in the area of dysphagia. EDUCATION: Participates in clinical education of fieldwork students and other professionals. Provides appropriate educational instruction to patients, patient caregivers and other clinical staff involved in the care of the patient. Provides in‑service education to therapists at the main site/FHC outpatient sites. Introduces new dysphagia treatments not currently used at NYU Langone. Provides training in specific dysphagia and neuro‑rehabilitation treatment techniques or related clinical specialty field topics. Develops educational and learning material which will enhance the quality and scope of the care rendered to the treating patient, i.e., pamphlets, video taps, home programs in collaboration with the other members of the team. Develops resource material to be utilized by staff members, i.e., suggests journals for library, access research articles, etc. PATIENT PROGRESS: Evaluates patient's progress and response to therapy, and modifies treatment intervention as needed. INTERVENTIONS: Implements treatment plans and protocols according to current professional and health system standards. Selects appropriate technical aids/assistive devices and correctly refers patients to other clinical services to achieve programmatic goals related to specialty. Assesses educational needs of patient, families, and implements a variety of methods for patient/family education and training during the rehabilitation process. CARE PLANNING: Develops and implements a care plan that meets the identified needs of the patient and care partners. The care plan must include measurable short and long‑term goals with time frames. Treatment plans should encompass comprehensive care based on the best practice model in SLP. Minimum Qualifications Graduate of a professional Masters/Doctorate program in Speech Pathology. New York State Speech Pathology License. Good communication and interpersonal skills. New York State license or eligible in Speech Pathology. CPR certification. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association is required at the time of hire and must be maintained. Preferred Qualifications Neurology Specialty Certification (NCS). 4‑6 years clinical expertise in assessment and treatment of dysphagia patients. 4,000 hours of direct practice experience with dysphagia patients. 20+ CEUs in remediation of dysphagia patients. Good computer skills. Knowledge of and experience with managed care and health insurance procedures and systems. Knowledge of local, state and federal health care regulatory, licensing and accreditation procedures and requirements. Language skills, in addition to English, preferred.
