Description of Work DSDHH is hiring! We are seeking a Deaf Services specialist to lead community development, advocacy, public outreach and awareness, and training at the DSDHH Wilson Regional Center. Sign‑on Bonus A Sign‑on bonus of $4,000 may be offered to the successful applicant(s) of this posting, contingent on Budget Approval. Eligibility for Sign‑on Bonus A newly hired permanent full‑time employee must work 30 to 40 hours per week to be eligible. Those working less than 40 hours per week will receive a prorated rate. An employee is not eligible if they have held a position in the North Carolina State government, including the judicial system, or the University of North Carolina system, within the last 12 months (the employee shall remain ineligible for 12 months from the separation date). An employee is not eligible if they have previously received a sign‑on bonus from any State agency. DHHS has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees. All Sign‑on Bonuses are contingent upon budget and final eligibility determination as of the effective date of hire. Additional information regarding the Sign‑on Policy can be found at Responsibilities Train Deaf consumers, service providers, and agencies on special topics including ADA laws, self‑advocacy, education issues, and mental health services. Assist DSDHH’s Wilson Regional Center with community development by developing and maintaining a collective of resources and materials on videotapes, information, books, and materials on ADA, social services, sign language, Deaf culture, etc. Act as a consultant on how to serve Deaf/Hard of Hearing/Deafblind individuals and provide assistance to agencies. Provide information and referrals on available resources and services to meet personal and family needs. Maintain public relations by writing articles about Deaf issues and serving on Deaf advisory groups and task forces. Advocate for Deaf/Hard of Hearing/Deafblind individuals in employment, law, medicine, and education to help them succeed. Provide awareness and sensitivity training to related service providers to accommodate and meet the needs of the Deaf community. Qualifications Minimum education and experience as listed on the vacancy announcement. Previous experience in social and cultural activities with the Deaf and DeafBlind and/or elderly population. Extensive knowledge of federal and state laws, programs and services relating to Deaf and DeafBlind North Carolinians. Effective public presentation skills. Ability and commitment to communicate effectively with Deaf and Deafblind people. Basic knowledge and skills in American Sign Language. Working Conditions Position is eligible for a hybrid‑teleworking schedule to include weekly onsite work hours. Salary Salary Range: $35,596 – $62,294. Recruitment Range: $35,596 – $42,255.
