Embedded Systems EngineerTexas Research Institute (TRI) Austin is a small business with over 45 years of experience conducting applied materials science R&D for government and private-sector clients. We are seeking an Embedded Systems Engineer to develop hardware and software systems designed to collect experimental data across a wide range of applications and physical scales. The ideal candidate will support research and development activities by applying experience in embedded hardware and firmware development, sensor integration, data acquisition, system troubleshooting, and laboratory testing. Success in this role will require the ability to translate loosely defined technical needs into real-world, dependable solutions.Primary ResponsibilitiesDesign and prototype custom PCBs, including schematic capture, component selection, assembly and bench testingDevelop embedded hardware and firmware for sensor-based data acquisition, and control systems, including bare-metal microcontroller applications and supporting computer softwareSelect, integrate, and configure instrumentation for data acquisition in existing installations and newly developed systemsDesign and implement custom sensing solutions using purpose-built components or commercial off-the-shelf productsApply signal conditioning and DSP techniques, including sampling, amplification, filtering, and analysis to a variety of sensor data.Design, prototype, and implement single- and multi-axis motion control systems and adapt existing equipment for new applicationsDesign electrical solutions ranging from low-voltage DC power distribution to high-voltage AC for material characterizationTroubleshoot, diagnose, modify, and repair electronic hardware, including obsolete and legacy systemsBuild and test prototypes through controlled lab evaluation, then adapt and validate them for field deploymentDocument technical progress, development activities, design decisions and test results in regular customer reportsPrepare, review, and contribute to technical proposals, reports, and other project deliverablesPreferred QualificationsB.S. or M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or closely related technical field2+ years of professional embedded development experienceStrong programming experience in C/C++ and PythonExperience with PCB design tools such as Altium or KiCadFamiliarity with hardware communication interfaces including SPI, I²C, RS-232, and CANComfortable with engineering lab tools including soldering equipment, logic analyzers, and oscilloscopesAble to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary engineering teamsStrong technical writing and communication skillsFamiliarity with analog, RF, or microwave frequency circuit designPrevious experience with NDE inspection methods including eddy current, ultrasound, or terahertz inspection is a plusThis is an on-site position located in Southwest Austin, Texas.
