Business Operations Officer/Deputy ALD for BSD

Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks an accomplished and forward‑thinking leader to serve as its Business Operations Officer (BOO)/Deputy Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for the Business Services Directorate (BSD). This onsite role reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for shaping the financial and operational strategy of one of the nation’s premier research institutions. Contribute directly to the success of research that addresses the nation’s most important scientific, energy, environmental, and national security challenges. Key Responsibilities Deputy ALD for BSD Role Serve as the CFO’s principal operational deputy and representative in matters related to BSD’s overall business processes, financial management, organizational performance, and strategic initiatives. Provide strategic leadership and execution by translating financial and operational priorities into actionable plans that support Laboratory objectives. Monitor organizational performance and identify risks, opportunities, and corrective actions to strengthen outcomes, enhance accountability, and support effective decision‑making. Lead operational excellence and continuous improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency, transparency, service delivery, and organizational effectiveness. Partner with Associate Laboratory Directors, Directorate leadership, Program Managers, and administrative organizations to build trusted relationships and support successful program execution. Coordinate business and financial interactions with DOE program offices, auditors, and external stakeholders while demonstrating exceptional executive‑level communication and professional credibility. Support contractor assurance, internal controls, compliance, and enterprise risk management activities across the Laboratory. Represent the CFO in executive reviews, management forums, audits, and institutional activities while serving as a trusted advisor on business and financial matters. Business Operations Officer Role Lead, mentor, and develop a high‑performing team of Business Operations Managers and financial professionals. Build a high‑performing business management organization that promotes collaboration, professional growth, succession planning, and continuous learning. Establish and maintain consistent business management practices, financial controls, and operational processes across Business Offices to ensure effective stewardship of Laboratory resources. Direct the development, execution, and monitoring of operating, capital, and project budgets across research and support organizations. Oversee forecasting, cost planning, workforce planning, resource allocation, and financial performance management activities to support informed decision‑making and mission success. Ensure accuracy, integrity, timeliness, and compliance of financial reporting, analyses, and submissions. Provide executive‑level financial and operational analyses that support strategic planning, investment decisions, and organizational performance. Drive a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and customer‑focused service throughout the business management community. Leadership Expectations The BOO/Deputy ALD‑BSD is expected to be a highly influential enterprise leader who inspires confidence, drives alignment, and delivers results across organizational boundaries. The role requires balancing strategic vision with operational discipline while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field. Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in financial or business management, budgeting, planning, or related disciplines. Minimum of six (6) years of leadership experience managing professional staff within a complex organization. Demonstrated experience leading financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and performance management functions. Experience advising senior leadership and presenting financial and operational information to executive audiences. Strong analytical, organizational, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills. Demonstrated ability to lead cross‑functional teams and drive organizational results. Proficiency with financial systems, reporting tools, and data analytics platforms. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Finance, or a related field. Professional certification such as CPA, CMA, CGFM, or equivalent. Experience within a Department of Energy environment, national laboratory, federally funded research and development center, research institution, or similarly complex organization. Experience leading business transformation, operational improvement, or organizational change initiatives. Knowledge of contractor assurance systems, enterprise risk management, internal controls, and performance‑based management practices. Experience managing large and complex operating, capital, and project portfolios. Other Information Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. This is a fully onsite position located at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in Upton, NY. The full salary range for this position is $184,400–$306,100 per year; salary offers will be commensurate with qualifications, education, and experience. Candidates must obtain and maintain a DOE Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) credential as required by HSPD‑12 and DOE orders.
