Payroll Manager

Robert Half is hiring a Payroll Manager to join our Full-Time Project Consultant team. This is a full-time salaried opportunity offering the stability of permanent employment, the variety of project-based work, and strong work-life balance.

As a Payroll Manager, you will support client engagements across the Chicago area by stepping into key payroll leadership roles during periods of transition, growth, system changes, or compliance initiatives.

Responsibilities:

• Manage full-cycle payroll processing across multi-state employee populations
• Ensure payroll accuracy and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
• Oversee payroll tax filings, garnishments, and reporting requirements
• Maintain payroll systems and support accurate payroll data and reporting
• Manage payroll reconciliations and partner with accounting on general ledger tie-outs
• Support audits, compliance initiatives, process improvements, and system implementations
• Partner with HR, Finance, and client teams to strengthen payroll operations
• Work across multiple payroll platforms and support system upgrades or integrations
• Provide guidance on multi-state payroll compliance; exposure to global payroll is a plus

Qualifications:

• Hands-on experience with payroll systems such as ADP (Workforce Now, Vantage), Workday Payroll, Ceridian Dayforce, UKG, Paychex, or similar platforms
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or related field
• 5+ years of progressive payroll experience, including ownership of full-cycle payroll
• Payroll Manager, Payroll Lead, or similar experience preferred
• Demonstrated expertise in multi-state U.S. payroll compliance , including tax filings, garnishments, and regulatory reporting
• Experience managing payroll through third-party vendors and service providers
• Experience supporting or leading payroll or HRIS system implementations, upgrades, or process improvements preferred
• Exposure to global payroll coordination or international vendors is a plus, not required
• Strong understanding of payroll accounting, reconciliations, and audit support
• CPP or FPC certification preferred
• Strong Excel, communication, and problem-solving skills

The salary range for this position is $90,000 to $105,000 annually. Benefits available to contract professionals, include medical, vision, dental, and life and disability insurance.
