Overview The City of Midland is seeking a dedicated City Prosecutor to join our team! This role represents the State of Texas in prosecuting Class C Misdemeanors and municipal code violations in the Midland Municipal Court. This dynamic role provides immediate hands‑on courtroom experience from day one – including managing dockets, conducting hearings and trials – along with case screening, legal research, trial preparation, advocacy, and consultation with peace officers and code enforcement officers. It’s an ideal position for building strong trial skills in a supportive, mentoring environment while making a real difference in community justice and public safety. Strategic Alignment The City Prosecutor advances the City of Midland's Strategic Plan by supporting Goal 2: Set the Standard for a Safe and Secure City through the fair and effective prosecution of Class C misdemeanors, municipal code violations, and emergency protective orders. This position also contributes to Goal 2.3 by strengthening code enforcement efforts, Goal 2.4 by supporting neighborhood revitalization, Goal 5.6 by delivering timely and efficient municipal court services, and Goal 5.5 by providing professional, equitable service to residents and stakeholders. Budgetary Responsibilities None. Responsibilities Prosecutes violations of the City’s Code of Ordinances and Class C Misdemeanors in the Midland Municipal Court, playing a key role in upholding community standards and protecting public safety. Represents the State of Texas in all emergency protective order hearings before the Municipal Court, advocating for the safety and protection of residents in need. Participates in all aspects of litigation by conducting research, drafting pleadings and motions, engaging in discovery, and appearing in court – building valuable advocacy and trial skills rapidly. Reviews police reports, evidence, and witness statements to determine appropriate charges and negotiate plea arrangements that deliver justice for the community. Drafts, reviews, and prepares professional legal correspondence and court documents. Physical and Environmental Conditions Ability to sit, stand, and move inside the building and transfer self from building to building. Strong analytical skills to understand and synthesize legal documents, technical materials, reports, and journals. Excellent capability to draft clear motions, legal briefs, and related documents. Outstanding oral and written communication skills to effectively engage with court officials, City employees, and members of the public. A commitment to public service and achieving just outcomes is essential. Minimum Education, Experience, and Certification Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree with a license to practice law in the State of Texas or eligibility to sit for the Texas Bar Exam. A valid Texas Driver’s License is required. Recent law school graduates and attorneys new to prosecution are strongly encouraged to apply – we provide mentorship and hands‑on training to help you grow and thrive.
