Behavioral Health Clinician

Under the supervision of the Behavioral Health Director, the Behavioral Health Clinician will have responsibility to provide mental health therapy to individuals, groups and families to promote optimum health and wellness. The Behavioral Health Clinician will play an integral part in the planning and design of the Yurok prevention and intervention projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Assisting in the implementation of the Yurok prevention and intervention projects. 2. Oversee the development of culturally competent mental health services for Yurok children, youth and their families. 3. Formulate innovative strategies to promote mental health and wellness and provide prevention of mental health imbalance in the Yurok community. 4. Evaluates clients in a variety of different settings. 5. Utilize evidence-based practices as well as traditional Yurok values/practices, personal wellness, and community in care practices. 6. Provide on-going therapy in short and long term out-patient care. 7. Participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. 8. Perform detailed client record documentation and maintain caseload records, case plans, progress notes and treatment reviews. 9. Attend department meetings and other required meetings and trainings as needed to engage the community and outside agencies in mental health awareness, promotion and prevention. 10. Provide courtroom testimony and consultation to school and adult programs as required. 11. Consult with and serve as a liaison with tribal departments and other outside community agencies. 12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: 1. G10: Bachelor's degree in related field with three years' job specified experience. 2. Employee must be willing to acquire any special certifications or attend any training that is determined to be relevant or becomes required, of the position, in the future. 3. Candidates with equivalent combinations of education, training and experience will be considered MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. A Licensed experienced level position is preferred, but a master's level position with adequate State Registration as an intern is required. 2. Experience with dual diagnosis issues with American Indian clients and substance abuse assessments and treatment options. 3. Knowledge of the Yurok Tribe and its surrounding communities. Must have knowledge and understanding of local Tribal communities including cultural values and beliefs, history, family systems and community. 4. Knowledge of facilities or agencies that provide services to Native populations. 5. Knowledge of traditional or alternative methods used to modify behaviors. 6. Extensive clinical work and supervisory experience in provision of services to communities in need. 7. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 8. At least intermediate knowledge and use of computer software, database entry, and spreadsheets (i.e. Microsoft Office, Excel). 9. Ability to express ideas on technical subjects clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. 10. Energetic, forward-thinking and creative with high ethical standards and an appropriate professional image. 11. Must sign and abide by a professional code of ethics and conduct. 12. Knowledge of community mental health treatment and wrap around services, including interviewing, assessment, individual, family and group counseling. 13. General mental health emergency interventions, diagnosis and brief and long-term therapy methods. 14. Principles of adult and child psychology, human development, child development and sexuality. 15. Evidence based practices, group and family therapies, talking circles and wellness circles. 16. Laws and regulations related to client's rights. 17. Community resources and agencies providing support services for the mentally ill and drug and alcohol rehabilitative services. 18. Recordkeeping and documentation including patient charting. 19. Assessing client's mental status and making accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plans. 20. Mental health prevention and intervention programs. 21. Confidentiality and non-judgmental demeanor. 22. Windows, Microsoft Office and other common programs. 23. Ability to plan and schedule workload independently. 24. Analyzing crisis situations in a prompt and concise manner. 25. Providing substance abuse assessment, treatment and dual diagnosis services. 26. Conducting mental health education and training programs. 27. Evaluating clients for medication referrals. 28. Presenting client history and behavioral impressions in a team setting. 29. Preparing detailed case summaries and maintaining accurate client records. 30. Protecting client rights and providing advocacy for clients and their families. 31. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others. 32. Providing direction and training to subordinates. 33. Recognition that in order to serve Yurok People one must know as much as possible about Yurok history, culture and values.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Performs the full range of supervisory duties and responsibilities. Plans work of subordinates based on priorities, nature of assignment. Develops work performance plans and evaluates the performance of subordinates. Provides advice, instruction, and guidance to subordinates on work and administrative matters. Effects disciplinary actions and determines developmental training needs of employees. Supervises subordinate employees including assigning and reviewing work, evaluation performance, training, taking necessary disciplinary action and making hiring and termination decisions. Use and promote a team approach to management and ensure accountability throughout the workplace CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: 1. Position could require travel and occasional work outside of regular work schedule.
