The hours for this role are 6pm-2am. Transportation home will be provided.
The legal proofreader reviews and refines complex legal and financial documents for absolute accuracy, formatting consistency, and grammatical precision.
Position Summary
The legal proofreader ensures that briefs, contracts, court filings, and financial tables are error-free before they are finalized or submitted. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, familiarity with specialized legal citation rules, and the ability to work under tight deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
- Document Review: Read and proofread legal and non-legal documents for typos, grammar, punctuation, syntax, and style consistency.
- Comparison & Tracking: Compare revised documents against original markups (redlining/blacklining) to confirm all requested edits were precisely entered.
- Verification: Check financial tables, cross-references, defined terms, and legal citations using resources like The Bluebook or Black's Law Dictionary .
- Workflow Management: Log document status, track assignments in internal databases, and communicate progress to attorneys and staff.
- Confidentiality: Maintain strict discretion regarding sensitive and proprietary client or firm materials.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: 2 to 5+ years of dedicated proofreading experience within a law firm, corporate legal department, or financial institution.
- Education: Bachelors degree preferred, though extensive professional proofreading experience is heavily prioritized.
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced command of Microsoft Word (including Track Changes, redlining, and blacklining) and basic Excel or PDF annotation tools.
- Knowledge Base: Firm grasp of standardized proofreading symbols, legal terminology, and citation formats (such as Bluebook ).
- Soft Skills: Exceptional focus, strong multitasking abilities, and a steady composure under pressure.
