Police Officer Position
This is general law enforcement and public safety work in the protection of life and property and in the execution of orders issued through the authority of the City of Doral Police Department. An employee in this classification may perform varied assignments in motorized patrol, traffic control and enforcement, accident investigation, preliminary and follow-up investigation at crime scenes, serving writs in criminal proceedings, and assisting in public safety education programs. Work involves an element of personal danger and high levels of physical, emotional, and mental stress to deal with people in various situations.

This position is classified as a non-exempt, full-time position with a 40 hour work-week schedule. The work schedule and working hours are defined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. A copy of the agreement is available in the City of Doral website.
Essential functions include patrolling the City of Doral area in a radio equipped car or motorcycle to preserve law and order, responding to a variety of calls that require several intervention approaches ranging from personal counseling techniques to the use of physical or deadly force, administering first aid, conducting preliminary investigations, locating evidence, obtaining information from witnesses, completing reports, making arrests and escorting prisoners to jail, testifying in court concerning work activities, serving criminal and metropolitan writs, conducting search and surveillance to determine whereabouts of person to be served, arresting fugitives and returning person to proper authority, serving as instructor in the teaching of traffic safety to civic and school groups, broadcasting traffic information through commercial radio stations, assisting in departmental programs and cooperating with other agencies in dealing with social, medical, and psychological problems such as domestic crises, alcoholism, attempted suicides, and other emotional disturbances, participating in underwater search and recovery missions, mobile crime laboratory investigations, undercover surveillance, civil defense exercises, rescue operations, marine patrol, and vice raids, directing traffic at local schools as needed, patrolling local schools and communities as needed, filling out paperwork, performing roll call and assigning duties as needed, assisting in the presentation of departmental training programs, and working variable hours and shift schedules as needed.
Minimum education and training requirements include being employed in a full-time sworn classification by (or separated within preceding 24 months from) another police agency, possession of a Basic Recruit Certificate of Compliance from the State of Florida or its equivalent, completed probation with a Florida law enforcement agency, and one year of police experience; or for those currently enrolled in Florida Basic Recruit Training (Police Academy), applications will now be accepted, however in order for candidate to be hired, they must meet the minimum requirements of a Police Officer prior to receiving a start date, which include passing the Basic Abilities Test, Florida Basic Recruit Training Program and have achieved a passing score on the State Officer Certification Exam. Physical Abilities Test (PAA) requirements include a timed mile run, push-ups (1 minute time limit-reps), sit-ups (1 minute time limit-reps), and a timed 300 Meter run. The test is conducted in a continuous manner resulting in a total composite score. To receive a passing score, the candidate must complete the PAA in a time period established based on minimum age requirements or less.
Minimum qualifications and standards required include knowledge of state statutes, local ordinances, and departmental regulations governing search and seizure of property, arrest, and admissibility of evidence, knowledge of the City of Doral geography and its road network, knowledge of law enforcement methods and procedures, knowledge of first aid principles and skill in their application, knowledge of basic human relations techniques, ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, ability to develop skill in the use and care of firearms, ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision, ability to enforce the law firmly, impartially, and with respect for individual rights, ability to prepare accurate reports of work activities, ability to assess an emergency or criminal situation and respond promptly and appropriately, often without direct supervision, ability to deal effectively and equitably with all people under various circumstances, ability to adapt to changing social conditions, ability to respond to training programs designed to develop proficiencies in work areas, ability to use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems, ability to use computers for data entry, ability to use highly technical computer applications, such as GIS or CAD, ability to use or repair small/light equipment, such as power tools, physical strength and agility, and ability to meet physical requirements, emotional stability and the necessary capacity to cope with a wide range of inter-personal situations, personal character necessary to withstand frequent assaults on ethical and legal integrity.
Physical requirements include ability to balance on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces; climb, crawl, crouch, feel, finger, grasp, handle, kneel, lift, pull, push, reach; receive information through oral communication; make rational decisions; make repetitive motions with the hands; express ideas by speaking accurately/loudly/quickly; stand for sustained periods of time; stoop by bending the body downwards; use visual acuity to perform activities such as viewing a computer terminal; and walk from one work site to another; ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
