Asphalt Laborer

CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt


REPORTS TO: Foreman


DEPARTMENT: Field Operations


JOB SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:

The Asphalt Laborer performs physical labor tasks at asphalt plants and/or construction sites, operating hand and power tools and working with and spreading asphalt, gravel, and other materials. This role lifts and carries materials, tools, and supplies, cleans tools, equipment, and work sites, and may assist with traffic control and support other craft workers. The Asphalt Laborer must be able to perform assigned duties in extreme weather conditions.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Manual Labor Support - Perform physical labor tasks at asphalt plants and/or construction sites in support of crew and production operations.


2. Tool & Equipment Operation - Operate hand and power tools, including shovels, rakes, measuring equipment, and other tools and instruments, as directed.


3. Material Handling - Work with and spread asphalt, gravel, and other materials as part of paving and construction operations.


4. Lifting & Carrying - Lift and carry materials, tools, and supplies required for job site operations.


5. Site & Equipment Cleanup - Clean tools, equipment, and materials, and clean up rubble, debris, and other waste from the work site.


6. Traffic Control Support - Assist with traffic control and support other craft workers on the job site as needed.


7. Weather Adaptability - Perform assigned duties in extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, and precipitation.


8. General Support - Perform other duties as assigned that are necessary to support crew and project operations.


QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Asphalt or construction labor experience preferred.


2. Ability to safely and effectively operate hand and power tools.


3. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions and physically demanding environments.


4. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and job site safety procedures.


5. High school diploma or GED helpful but not required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no supervisory responsibility.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works around moving traffic and near moving mechanical parts, and works in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to airborne particles and vibration, and is occasionally exposed to extreme weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear. The employee stands for 10 to 12 hours per shift, and frequently walks, climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls; bending or stooping is required for up to 30 minutes occasionally, crouching for up to 1 hour, and sitting for up to 30 minutes per shift. The employee frequently carries objects for 10 or more hours per shift, and lifts and carries objects weighing 5-10 pounds continuously, 10-20 pounds for up to 10 hours, and 20-50 pounds for up to 4 hours per shift, with objects over 50 pounds lifted occasionally; the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Days and hours of work vary based on the project schedule, weather, and production needs, and may include early mornings, extended shifts, and nights and weekends, particularly during peak paving season.


TRAVEL

This position requires minimal travel, other than between assigned job sites within the local service area.
