Overview

The MBU/Peds Nurse Educator promotes quality evidenced based nursing practice through education and professional development of nursing staff.

Position Reports To : Clinical Manager/Director

Responsibilities

1. Provides teaching and facilitates evidenced based learning with staff to optimize patient outcomes in the clinical area.

2. Promotes skill development through formal classroom education, one-on-one interaction and alongside staff on the unit(s).

3. Recognizes needs of shift work and schedules time with staff on all clinical shifts.

4. Limited travel to non-CWH sites required.

5. In conjunction with the Clinical Nurse Manager, directs orientation of new nurses:

   • Facilitates orientation and assists with evaluation of core clinical competencies.

   • Facilitates the completion of the orientee’s skills list and participates in the three-month evaluation of new staff.

   • Serves as a mentor and coach to new staff.

   • Keeps orientation materials current.

6. Collaborates with the Director/Clinical Nurse Manager to determine education needs for the unit.

7. Collaborates with the Clinical Nurse Manager to provide 1:1 teaching with nurses where a practice development need is identified.

8. Communicates the unit’s education needs to the Manager of Clinical Development for coordination of training activities.

9. Provides input to the Clinical Nurse Manager for annual evaluations of nursing staff.

10. Organizes and teaches educational programs:

    • Identifies learning needs and professional self-improvement needs for nursing staff.

    • Provides instruction to staff on a formal and informal basis at the unit level.

    • Serves a coach and mentor to staff.

    • Identifies teaching material needs for staff.

11. Assists the Clinical Nurse Manager/Director in developing, presenting and implementing best practices for nursing area.

12. Works with the Manager of Clinical Development to instruct standard work best practices to establish and maintain consistency in nursing care among all CWH units and service lines.

13. Remains current in nursing area practice by attending educational offerings. Presents education back to the department.

14. Maintains a high standard of professional responsibility and performance:

    • Consistently provides nursing care with a high degree of clinical competency.

    • Provides effective education to staff.

    • Uses Evidence Based Practice/Research.

    • Demonstrates communication and interactions in accordance to Confluence Health’s Code of Conduct in all aspects of job performance.

15. Establishes programs to assist staff pursuing certification.

16. Assists with the instruction and coordination of unit specific resident RN’s.

17. Promotes a team environment which enhances interdepartmental partnership and cooperation.

18. In partnership with the Clinical Nurse Manager, establishes an annual unit level in-service plan with goals, timeframes and documentation processes.

19. Required to maintain active Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.

20. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

• Bachelor's Degree (BSN - must be obtained within 1-2 years of hire), or other appropriate degree.

• Minimum of four years of current specialty nursing experience.
• Current licensure in the state of Washington (RCW 18.88) or licensure through Multistate Nurse Licensure Compact (SSB 5499).
• The qualified candidate must have demonstrated leadership skills and teaching abilities.
• Must possess basic computer skills related to Windows navigation, mouse usage, keyboarding, email communication and password management.

Desired:

• Master's Degree (MSN).
• Formal experience teaching adult learners.
• Unit Specific Certification.
