Assistant General Manager

DogiZone is Maryland’s award-winning, full-service destination for dog training, daycare, boarding, grooming, and retail. For more than 20 years, we have built one of Montgomery County’s most trusted pet care brands — and we are entering our next stage of growth. Our flagship Rockville operation includes an expanded 18,000-square-foot campus, a team of approximately 50–70 associates, multiple service departments, and a growing customer base. At the same time, DogiZone is developing a multi-unit growth platform that includes both company-owned and franchised locations. For the right operational leader, that growth creates meaningful opportunities to take on increasing responsibility. You will serve as a key operating partner to the General Manager and as the senior on-site decision-maker when the GM is unavailable . The role requires someone who can move comfortably between leading people, solving operating problems, reviewing performance, and making sure standards are consistently executed across the business. Position Summary The Assistant General Manager supports the General Manager in directing day-to-day operations across DogiZone’s daycare, boarding, training, grooming, and retail departments. The AGM helps translate company objectives into disciplined daily execution — ensuring appropriate staffing, consistent service and facility standards, strong customer experiences, effective cost management, and continued revenue growth. The AGM also coaches and holds department leaders accountable for performance, develops frontline leadership capability, and assumes primary operating responsibility for the facility when the General Manager is not present. What You’ll Do Operations & Facility Leadership Ensure a superior, consistent experience for every pet and owner across daycare, boarding, training, grooming, and retail. Maintain an exceptionally clean, safe, well-maintained, and operationally ready facility. Drive consistent execution of operating procedures, service standards, and safety requirements across every department. Identify operating issues early, solve problems quickly, and ensure appropriate follow-through. Serve as the facility’s senior decision-maker and primary point of accountability in the General Manager’s absence. Team Leadership & Accountability Lead, coach, and develop department managers, team leads, and frontline associates. Establish clear expectations and hold leaders accountable for operating results, service standards, staffing, and execution. Participate in hiring, onboarding, performance management, and development of team members. Lead staff meetings, training, and certification programs in partnership with the General Manager and department leaders. Build a culture of accountability, teamwork, continuous improvement, and exceptional care. Business & Financial Performance Partner with the General Manager to achieve revenue, profitability, labor productivity, and customer-service objectives. Monitor daily and weekly KPIs, identify performance gaps, and drive corrective action with department leaders. Participate in budgeting, expense management, forecasting, and location-level P&L review. Identify opportunities to improve productivity, utilization, customer retention, and revenue. Help evaluate and implement new services, programs, promotions, and other growth opportunities. Staffing & Scheduling Ensure staffing and schedules align with customer demand, operating requirements, and labor productivity objectives. Coordinate staffing across departments to maintain appropriate coverage while controlling labor costs. Anticipate staffing gaps and work with department leaders to resolve them before they affect service. Remain highly visible in the operation and step into critical operating gaps when necessary. Client & Community Relations Ensure exceptional, proactive communication with pet owners and effective resolution of customer concerns. Develop strong customer-service capabilities throughout the team. Build relationships with customers and represent DogiZone professionally within the community. Participate in special events, partnerships, and community activities that strengthen the DogiZone brand. What You Bring 3–5+ years of progressively responsible management experience in a high-volume hospitality, retail, service, recreation, pet care, or similarly complex operating environment. Demonstrated experience leading teams and holding managers and frontline employees accountable for performance. Strong operating instincts and the ability to move comfortably between managing people, solving problems, analyzing performance, and working directly in the operation. Experience with budgeting, labor management, cost control, KPIs, and P&L performance. A strong customer-service orientation and experience managing in a customer-facing business. Demonstrated ability to hire, coach, develop, and, when necessary, discipline employees. Genuine enthusiasm for dogs and comfort working in an active pet-care environment; pet-industry experience is a plus, but not required. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Comfort using business technology, scheduling systems, and performance-reporting tools. Flexibility to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as business needs require. Ability to remain accessible outside normal working hours when significant operating issues require management attention.
