Pediatric Primary Care Physician | Family Medicine

This position will be based at VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, Virginia. VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital is a small, rural community hospital that provides a wide range of subspecialty care to a large region. In 2017, VCU Health System built a beautiful, brand-new hospital that is both aesthetically and clinically spectacular. The family medicine residency clinic is attached to the hospital. Our department provides newborn nursery and inpatient pediatrics coverage. Current inpatient volumes are approximately 300 deliveries and 50 pediatrics admissions per calendar year. High acuity cases are transferred to a higher level of care. July 1, 2025, CMH welcomed its first class of family medicine residents. The residents spend their first year of training at our main campus in Richmond, approximately 75 miles to our north, and spend their second and third years in South Hill. Founded in 1970, the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health at VCU has a long and proud history of training medical students and resident physicians. Our department houses our family medicine medical student education programs, including a highly rated clerkship and two longitudinal, four-year track programs. Our department is one of the top ten in the nation for family medicine research. We have four affiliated family medicine residency programs at various locations around the Commonwealth of Virginia in addition to our new VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency, which will graduate its first class in 2027.

Position Responsibilities:

Clinical: Physician will provide clinical service to include: being available to the emergency department and inpatients; newborn nursery coverage, including being present for urgent and stat c-sections and other high risk deliveries; see patients in the ambulatory clinic setting; maintain clinical competency in Pediatrics and Newborn care. While on-call for the inpatient service the physician must be able to be physically present on-site within 30 minutes. For Medicine/Pediatrics boarded physicians, ambulatory clinic can include a balance of adult and pediatrics, and inpatient adult duties are an optional role.

Precepting: Physician will provide precepting and mentorship to medical students, residents and fellows when applicable. Physician will provide education to ancillary staff as needed.

Service: Physician will serve on hospital or departmental committees when appropriate, and engage in professional activities through journal review, conference presentations and national organization committee work. Participate in activities, which demonstrate professional commitment to position and to VCU Health Systems.

Administrative: Perform administrative duties as are appropriate and necessary to support operations of the VCU Health Systems including but not limited to completing patient medical records, student evaluations and other required documentation.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Eligible to obtain license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia
• Completion of an accredited residency program in Pediatrics or Internal Medicine/Pediatrics
• Board Certified and recertified if applicable by the American Board of Pediatrics
• Experience in providing direct patient care to underserved populations across multiple settings
• Willing and able to care for patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting and newborn nursery
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in providing direct patient care in the ambulatory clinic setting and newborn nursery
