Professional Development Assistant Nurse Manager - Emergency Medicine

Job Summary Assistant Nurse Managers are registered nurses who are responsible for the operation of the nursing unit over a specific time period. The Assistant Nurse Manager must have a strong foundation of clinical knowledge and skills on which to base judgments and make decisions, organizing abilities to direct nursing tasks and operations, and interpersonal skills to facilitate communication and the work of others. The Assistant Nurse Manager accepts the responsibility for, and is accountable for, his/her own nursing practice. The Assistant Nurse Manager also seeks out and pursues opportunities for learning and assumes responsibility for their own self-development. Registered nurses must be knowledgeable and skillful in performing the Assistant Nurse Manager role. A registered nurse who assumes the role of Assistant Nurse Manager also assumes the responsibility inherent to the role. Three fundamental responsibilities for Assistant Nurse Manager include planning, coordinating, and evaluating unit nursing activities. In addition, the Assistant Nurse Manager identifies and implements nursing interventions and evaluates results for a wide variety of patient populations, directs and acts as resource to other members of the nursing team as assigned and promotes compliance and support for policies. The primary responsibilities for this position consist of providing total, comprehensive, continuous and patient centered care which includes assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing plan of care; delivering direct patient care; ensuring patient satisfaction; training and delegating duties; and adhering to university policies and procedures as well as federal, state and local regulations. Autonomous nursing care is the ability of a nurse to assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The nurse is expected to practice autonomously consistent with American Nurses' Association Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgment is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care. Apply By Date 8/25/2026 at 11:59 p.m. PST Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certificate Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certificate Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), or a Bachelor's degree (in a field other than nursing) paired with a Master's of Science degree in Nursing (MSN). 5 year of experience in Emergency department specialty: Level 1 Adult and Pedriatric Trauma Center Active member of department committee for at least 1 year Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language Ability to utilize medical terminology appropriately Knowledge of current trends in nursing Commitment to excellence in patient care Effective interpersonal skills Demonstrates accountability and professionalism Adapts to change in a positive, professional and productive manner Knowledge of legal implications in clinical practice and documentation Knowledge of performance improvement and evidence-based practice Basic computer skills Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care, taking into consideration protective interventions, development (behavioral and physical) and physiological characteristics specific to the patients Flexibility in work schedule, inspires and achieves outcomes in staff learning through formal and/or informal. teaching methods. Preferred Qualifications Certificate Mobile Intensive Care Nurse (MICN) Certificate CEN CCRN Master's of Science degree in Nursing (MSN) Experience with educating staff, leading departmental initiatives, Adult Learner Knowledge Experienced in teaching/education to clinical staff or in community; involved in process improvement project and/or performance improvement review. Key Responsibilities 60% - Nursing Process and Practice 25% - Leadership and Management 5% - Professional Development 5% - Quality 5% - Nursing Research Department Overview Emergency Medicine provide Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma care for more than 33 of California's 58 counties. UC Davis Health System is home to state-of-the-art emergency care for children. Our Pediatric Emergency Department features the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center in inland Northern California (verified by the American College of Surgeons). From Portland to Fresno, from outside the Bay Area to Reno, no other hospital in inland Northern California has a Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center servicing approximately 70,000 patients each year. The Department of Emergency Medicine at UC Davis provides a dedicated team of physicians, nurses, 42 residents, and a total of 26 specialists of every medical and surgical specialty to treat critically ill and injured adults and children. Our team provides an extraordinary level of knowledge, skill and compassion to every patient we serve at our Level 1 Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion. The Emergency Department is prepared and equipped to provide comprehensive and efficient emergency care to patients in need of medical and surgical specialty physicians to treat critical and acute illnesses and injuries 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Registered Nurses in the Emergency Department at UC Davis Medical Center provide care to adult and pediatric patients with a variety of emergent (medical surgical, critical care, emergent, perioperative) needs. Patient conditions include: acute, chronic medical/surgical, trauma, critical or behavioral health. Department Specific Job Scope The Professional Development AN2, is responsible for establishing an environment that facilitates professional growth, role competence and proficiency in emergency medicine practice. The Professional Development AN2 is accountable for the achievement of professional and clinical outcomes for all assigned staff. In collaboration with the Executive Director, Nurse Manager and leadership team, the Professional Development AN2 is responsible for the interview and selection of unit staff (professional and technical). For the first 6 months to one year, based upon advancement with competencies, all staff newly hired will have a direct reporting relationship with the Professional Development AN2. This will facilitate continuous performance feedback for the new hires during the initial orientation phase and pivotal first year of practice; ensuring successful professional enculturation and performance. Professional Development AN2 and leadership team will collaborate closely to provide structure for staff competence and outcomes, that provide excellence in patient safety and quality, create a culture of safety and lead and sustain the development of nursing practice. The overall outcome of Professional Development AN2 is the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that translate into practice and contribute to the safety of patients/families and provision of quality care. Responsibilities: To guide and mentor nurses in their development. To select and hire professional and technical staff for the emergency care in collaboration with leadership team Develop measure and methods for the evaluation of staff performance and their practice outcomes. To provide and facilitate continuous performance feedback in order to advance nurses and techs knowledge, skill and practice to support development and utilization of other care team members. To ensure evidence-based standards of care are being practiced clinically in collaboration with Clinical Nurse Educators and CNLs. Orientation: Develops, coordinates, facilitates, conducts, and evaluates orientation programs and innovative learning approaches for staff. Partners in developing recruiting strategy plans, interviewing and hiring new positions in collaboration with leadership team. Responsible for facilitation of all aspects of on boarding progression and enculturation, including counseling and separation recommendations when required. Provides performance feedback including active participation in the annual performance appraisal. Competency Program: Develops, coordinates, facilitates, conducts, and evaluates competency programs for all staff. Ensures Staff Competency: Achieves successful outcomes by utilizing innovative and flexible methodologies. Monitors and ensures excellence in the clinical practice of nursing and the delivery of patient care in collaboration with Clinical Nurse Educators and CNLs. Provides continuous substantive performance feedback for all staff and during the orientation phase and for 6 months to one year is primary author of Performance appraisal for new staff Accountable for competence achievement of staff through planning, collaboration, coaching and counseling Recommends, initiates and provides coaching using Just Culture. When necessary, recommends additional next steps using accountability matrix in collaboration with ED Manager and AN2s. In-service Education Develops, coordinates, facilitates, conducts, and evaluates in-service programs for all staff Continuing Education Identifies through needs assessment, continuing education opportunities that augment knowledge, skills, and attitudes of all nursing staff in collaborations with Clinical Nurse Educators and CNLs; Demonstrates proficiency in identifying continuing education offerings that are provider directed, learner directed and learner paced Creates, manages, implements, coordinates, and evaluates continuing education. Outcomes Management In collaboration with the interdisciplinary team: Ensures excellence in outcomes for all quality, safety, patient experience, operational metrics and regulatory requirements. Leads and builds the capacity of the staff and interdisciplinary team(s) for excellence in all aspects of their performance and outcomes Embraces change management, innovation and systems thinking and planning. Leadership Serves as a visible leader and role model in the development/attainment of hospital and unit service line mission and goals. Embraces the concept of change and assists staff through the change process as evidenced by adoption of new behaviors and/or processes in collaboration with leadership team.
