The NCWRC is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of North Carolina’s fishing, hunting, trapping, and boating laws. The agency has an operational budget of approximately $100 million and employs approximately 700 full-time staff and 100 seasonal temporary staff across the state, including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians, wildlife law enforcement officers, wildlife educators, communication specialists, and customer service, information technology and administrative professionals. Mission The NCWRC Mission is to conserve North Carolina’s wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters, anglers, boaters, and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation. Description of Work The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is accepting applications for a District3 Wildlife Conservation Biologist (Conservation Biologist I) for the Wildlife Management Division, Operations Program. The mission of the Wildlife Management Division is to conserve wildlife species and habitats and to develop, implement, and facilitate sound wildlife management policies and programs to ensure the wise use of wildlife resources by North Carolina citizens. This position is critical to accomplishing the Commission’s goals of conserving fish and wildlife habitats and protecting, managing and enhancing wildlife populations statewide. The Wildlife Operations Program is responsible for ensuring agency programs and activities related to wildlife management and ecology are administered to local landscapes, landholders, other public and private entities outside the agency, and the hunting and non‑hunting public. The position reports directly to the Regional Supervisor (Piedmont Wildlife Operations Supervisor). The primary purpose of this Wildlife Conservation Biologist position will be to plan, organize, direct, and participate in wildlife and habitat management projects in the district and across the Wildlife Management Division’s (WMD) Piedmont Region. The position will: Coordinate and collaborate with private landowners, land managers, consultants, corporations, NGOs, and governmental units to conserve wildlife and habitat in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, including North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission’s (NCWRC) Wildlife Conservation Land Program and USDA Farm Bill programs. Work cooperatively with Division wildlife biologists and other Agency staff to implement multiple agency programs and special assignments, including multiple biological data collection efforts, technical assistance for human wildlife interactions, handling live and dead animals, using immobilization drugs to capture live animals, and conducting wildlife disease/mortality investigations including field necropsies. Assist district staff in addressing human wildlife interaction issues (HWI) on a frequent basis, including involvement in outreach programs specifically aimed at reducing negative HWIs across the district and region. Assist with surveys, monitoring, restoration, and research activities for wildlife species within the WMD. Prepare and present wildlife programs to a wide variety of public and professional audiences. Attend joint meetings with other agency and division staff members, helping to plan and monitor ongoing projects, providing technical expertise relative to overall activities, and attending regular section/project meetings to assess program status. This is a HOME‑BASED position. The workstation for this position is in the employee’s home‑based office using an agency‑provided computer. The employee in this position is expected to provide home office space compliant with WRC and State policies. This position requires a home‑based duty station within WRC District3, which consists of Edgecombe, Franklin, Halifax, Johnston, Nash, Northampton, Wake, Warren, Wayne, Wilson, and Vance counties. A normal Monday‑Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm schedule is associated with this position, though frequent daily travel, occasional overnight travel, and weekend work may be needed to meet with landowners, attend meetings, coordinate activities, etc. Recruitment Range RECRUITMENT RANGE: $ $52,592 - $72,314 Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Management Preferences Knowledge of North Carolina’s wildlife and plant communities including basic life histories and identification Experience operating and maintaining equipment and vehicles used in wildlife management, agriculture, and forestry practices. Accomplished communication skills to coordinate with resource professionals, relay technical information to employees, and to the public. Experience with personal computers and mapping software. Excellent organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail. Special Qualification / Requirement A Valid NC Driver’s License is required within 90 days of employment.
