Job Description
This role focuses on MIG welding using .035 hard wire on primarily thin-gauge mild steel components in a fabrication shop environment. You will work with material thicknesses ranging from 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch, with occasional special projects involving up to 1 inch thick steel. The position requires strong blueprint reading skills, knowledge of welding symbols, and the ability to independently set up welding equipment and fit parts using fixtures to produce clean, precise welds.
Responsibilities
- Perform MIG welding using .035 hard wire on mild steel components ranging from 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch thick, with occasional work on steel up to 1 inch thick for special projects.
- Set up welding machines independently by adjusting amperage and voltage from zero to appropriate settings based on job requirements and welding procedures.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and layout drawings to determine weld locations, dimensions, and weld symbols.
- Identify and apply correct weld symbols from blueprints to ensure proper weld type, size, and placement.
- Fit and assemble parts using fixtures, ensuring correct alignment, dimensions, and tolerances before welding.
- Produce clean, smooth welds that are free of sharp edges, spatter, and defects, maintaining high-quality standards.
- Follow established welding procedures (WPS) and work instructions to meet production and quality requirements.
- Use tape measures and other measuring tools to verify dimensions and confirm accuracy of fit-up and finished weldments.
- Work with various wire sizes such as .030, .035, and .045 as required by specific jobs or materials.
- Collaborate with team members in the weld shop and paint shop to support production schedules for customers in railroad, transportation, military, construction, and oil and gas industries.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to safety procedures and proper handling of tools and equipment.
- Adapt to changing shift hours and production demands while maintaining consistent quality and productivity.
Essential Skills
- At least 1 year of welding experience in a manufacturing setting.
- Proficiency in MIG welding (GMAW) using .035 hard wire on mild steel.
- Ability to weld thin-gauge steel from 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch, with capability to handle up to 1 inch thick steel for special projects.
- Ability to independently set up welding machines, including adjusting amperage and voltage from zero to appropriate welding parameters.
- Strong blueprint reading skills, including the ability to interpret dimensions, schematics, and layout drawings.
- Ability to identify and correctly interpret weld symbols on blueprints.
- Competence in using a tape measure accurately for layout and verification of dimensions.
- Experience with fabrication shop welding, in addition to any structural or production welding experience.
- Knowledge of GMAW welding processes and symbols.
- Ability to perform proper fit-up of parts using fixtures before welding.
- Commitment to producing clean, smooth welds without sharp edges or defects.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with multiple wire sizes such as .030, .035, and .045.
- Familiarity with FCAW and stainless welding processes.
- Exposure to TIG welding.
- Experience working from welding procedures (WPS) and established process documentation.
- Experience in welding components for industries such as railroad, transportation, military, construction, or oil and gas.
- Comfort working in a high-volume weld and paint shop environment with multiple weld stations.
