Vehicle Maintenance Mechanic III

Position Summary: Perform mechanical repairs to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles.

Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities:

• Applies basic working knowledge while using diagnostic equipment to evaluate basic mechanical problems in vehicles.
• Services vehicles according to established preventive maintenance schedule.
• Inspects vehicles and evaluates condition of systems, equipment, accessories, and lights using basic working knowledge; services as needed.
• Maintains accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
• Makes emergency calls as assigned by supervisors when vehicles have problems in the field.
• Performs preventive maintenance, including bleeding of air tanks, on shop equipment according to established schedules.
• Completes work with little to no latitude for independent judgment in accordance to quality, performance, safety and industry standards.
• Performs other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expected for this position.

Minimum Requirements:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or regional accrediting agency).
• Up to a 1 year experience
• Must pass annual medical examination per Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
• Valid Texas driver's license Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License with endorsements for school bus driver (persons hired with a class "C" driver's license, must obtain the "A" or "B" CDL with endorsements within 30 calendar days from the date of employment). Safe driving record verified by Texas Department of Public Safety (meet and maintain liability coverage eligibility). Revised: 07/16/2025

Preferred Requirements:

• 0 - 2 years full time experience within the last five (5) years, in general automotive repair work and tune- up of diesel vehicles, gasoline vehicles, small engines and air conditioning systems.
• Associates Degree in automotive applications or 45 college hours of courses in automotive applications, within the last five (5) years, may be noted as credit for one (1) year of work experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Ability to diagnose and repair automotive vehicle problems, including engine, transmission (both standard and automatic) drive train, brakes, electrical system, fuel system, exhaust and emission control systems, wheel alignment and automotive air conditioning.
• Knowledge of safety measures regarding use of standard chemicals related to the position is required.
• Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance tasks.
• Ability to operate all types of mechanic power and hand tools.

Working Conditions Work Environment:

• Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, teacher resource materials and equipment, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.
• Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise. Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.

Physical Demands/Requirements:

• Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions/deadlines; frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, balancing, pulling and pushing; reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity and prolonged data input; occasional lift/carry light, moderate 15-44 pounds.
