Health IT - Principal Trainer

Job Description Health IT Training and Education is responsible for all aspects of the electronic health record at UCSF Health hospitals, practices, affiliates, and community partners. The Principal Trainer collaborates with the Epic/Apex application teams, informatics, and clinical/business operations to provide training support to end users, including front‑end users, revenue cycle staff, physicians, nurses, and other stakeholders. The role focuses on educating and supporting practices with the Health Technology application, applying experience as a seasoned clinical applications professional to develop, document, train, implement, and support best practice standard work to improve the use of Apex/Epic and third‑party systems. Excellent customer service is provided to end users, issues are tracked, and follow‑ups performed promptly. The Principal Trainer will work at multiple locations including UCSF Health San Francisco, Benioff Children’s Hospitals‑Oakland and San Francisco, UCSF campus, and community affiliate partners. Responsibilities Design and conduct user training in clinical information system workflows, processes, and hardware/operating systems at all levels of complexity; develop effective training tools and aids. Create and modify course materials, lesson plans, tips & tricks, web‑based content, and manage content published on the Apex Knowledge Database; develop dissemination strategies. Build and manage the MST training environment for end‑user training and simulations; use Epic tools to support environment build, including Mitosis, Appointment Builder, and Patient Duplicator; collaborate with SMEs to create realistic training scenarios. Collaborate with key clinical users on complex projects to modify workflow due to new releases and system upgrades; plan and develop improvements in functionality and efficiency of clinical applications; serve as liaison between vendors and IT leadership; establish scope and requirements for training initiatives. Plan, implement, and support clinical software, hardware, operating systems, and distributed clinical information systems of moderate scope; contribute to estimates of resource needs and scheduling of system upgrades and modifications. Analyze patient‑care workflow and develop IT solutions to improve system integration and functionality; organize medical record tools and data; apply innovation in managing complex scenarios. Obtain Epic certification within 12 months of hire. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in health care information technology, computer science, or related area; or equivalent combination of experience and training. Epic certification completed within 12 months of start date. 3–5 years of relevant experience. Broad and/or in‑depth knowledge of 1–2 areas of focus in clinical applications specialty area(s); knowledge of systems and functions, including design, development, implementation, user support and training, maintenance, quality assurance, and system testing and evaluation. Strong problem‑resolution skills, with the ability to quickly diagnose problems and develop, test, and implement effective solutions in a timely manner. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to train, support, and work collaboratively with users of clinical information systems at all professional and technical levels. Detail‑oriented with proven organizational skills and the ability to manage time, prioritize tasks, and see projects through to completion on deadline. Strong analytical skills and knowledge in documentation and reporting, with the ability to design and execute tests, analyze system performance data, and produce substantive reports and analyses. Ability to work with senior staff and managers, serving as a technical resource and providing advice and counsel on issues of functionality, efficiency, cost‑effectiveness, policy, and performance.
