Job Summary Under direct supervision, and according to established policies and procedures, performs a variety of duties in the OR and related areas to assist the surgical team at the ambulatory surgery center (ASC). Responsibilities Principal Duties: Perform first scrub role, directly assisting the surgeon by passing sterile instruments and supplies at the sterile field. Anticipate surgeons’ requests based on the type of case being performed. Support the second scrub role, including holding retractors, sponging or suctioning operative site, and applying electrocautery within the scope of practice. Collaborate with the circulating RN to account for countable items at the sterile field according to policy and procedure. Assist RN in gathering appropriate supplies for cases. Identify specific care needs related to the patient's age and size. Promote collaborative relationships with OR personnel by articulating practice issues and communicating constructively. Develop and present product and equipment reviews for OR staff. Analyze preference card data and provide input for surgeon preference card content. Collaborate with nurse manager to determine capital budget needs. Maintain adequate inventory levels of specialty supplies and implants. Additional Responsibilities: Assist with preparation, maintenance, and after-care of supplies, equipment, and facilities in the OR. Place equipment and supplies in the operating room and arrange instruments as instructed. Wash and sterilize equipment when necessary following manufacturer recommendations. Assist team members in placing and positioning patients on the operating room table. Dons gown and gloves, assisting OR team members as needed. Apply dressings post-surgery. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent and completion of a DMC surgical technician training program or equivalent combination of training and/or experience. Certification by the Association of Surgical Technologists highly desirable. One to two years of experience as a surgical technician preferred. Facility Description Children’s Hospital of Michigan is an international leader in pediatric and adolescent medicine. Surgical services include general, thoracic, reconstructive and cardiovascular. The hospital offers advanced diagnostic services including PET and MRI. It is a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and dedicated pediatric burn center.
