Paralegal 4 Position
The Attorney General's Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Paralegal 4 in the Complex Litigation Division. This position can be located in either Tumwater or Seattle, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).
Paralegal 4 Salary Range 62: $73,284 - $98,520. The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
The following stipends may apply based on position requirements:
- Note: Paralegal 4s assigned to work within King County receive a 5% premium in addition to their base pay under Article 42.10B (Salary Adjustments) for recruitment and retention purposes. If a 5% premium or another compensation adjustment achieving a comparable pay differential is later incorporated into the WFSE GG CBA for King County Paralegal 4 positions, this temporary premium under Article 42.10B will be discontinued.
- Incumbents assigned to our Seattle office location receive an additional 5% King County Location Pay stipend.
- Incumbents assigned to a position designated as requiring dual language skills will receive a 5% Dual Language Requirement Pay stipend.

Our team of 29 attorneys and 30 professional staff litigate significant cases for the State. We have ongoing cases challenging overreach by the federal government, including recent actions against HUD homelessness grants, public benefits programs, student mental health grants, gender-affirming care, FEMA disaster mitigation funding, the dismantling of HHS, teen reproductive health education, and public health grants.
We also litigate cases such as Washington's lawsuits against gambling apps; lawsuits related to the opioid epidemic; challenges to the constitutionality of the State's law restricting gun magazine capacity size and the law banning the sale of assault weapons; a campaign finance enforcement action; and challenges to the State's forest management and conservation plans.
This position serves as the professional staff supervisor for the division's Paralegal 3 team and functions as a lead paralegal on some of the AGO's most complex cases, including large-scale litigation.
Working closely with attorneys and division leadership, this role helps coordinate litigation strategy, oversee discovery and case preparation, and ensure professional staff work is accurate, timely, and aligned with division priorities.

- Provide leadership and supervision to the division's Paralegal 3 team
- Serve as the division's expert on litigation support management systems and processes
- Coordinate large-scale discovery and e-discovery projects
- Develop and deliver training for attorneys and paralegals
- Serve as lead paralegal on complex litigation and appellate matters

Combination of seven years of experience* through:
- Paralegal certification
- Two-year paralegal degree
- Paralegal plus (or nine-month paralegal, post BA) certification,
and/or
- One year experience as a Paralegal 3 in Washington State Service.
*You may have gained applicable paraprofessional experience through previous Paralegal or Legal Assistant work. Examples of paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney:
- Preparing legal pleadings and legal correspondence
- Ensuring and verifying timely and proper service of legal documents
- Calculating, verifying, and calendaring critical events and other dates
- Managing case documents, files and exhibits
- Tracking and organizing discovery documents
- Researching legal issues and verifying legal citations and references for accuracy
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of civil litigation processes, including discovery, motion practice, trial preparation, and appellate procedures.
- Knowledge of state and federal court rules and filing procedures.
- Knowledge of electronic discovery practices, litigation support software, and document management systems.
- Knowledge of public sector legal environments and the role of state agencies in delivering services to the public.
- Knowledge of best practices in case management, discovery coordination, and evidence organization in complex litigation.
Skills:
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills, including the ability to mentor staff, assign work, and support professional development.
- Advanced legal research, factual investigation, and case analysis skills.
- Excellent written communication skills, including drafting legal documents, memoranda, and correspondence.
- Strong organizational and project management skills to coordinate large volumes of information and manage competing deadlines.
- Ability to design and deliver training to attorneys and legal staff on procedures, technology, or litigation practices.
- Strong litigation technology skills, including experience with e-discovery platforms, document databases, and large-scale document review.
Abilities:
- Ability to manage complex litigation support projects with minimal supervision.
- Ability to analyze large amounts of information and identify relevant facts or issues.
- Ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced environment with shifting deadlines and competing demands.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with attorneys, staff, courts, client agencies, and external partners.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
- Ability to identify operational improvements and implement best practices for litigation support and case management.
